11 Practical Outfit Formulas We Always Come Back to in April

April is upon us, and although we can officially say spring is here, the weather still can’t seem to commit to the change in season—one minute, it’s glorious sunshine, and then the next, it’s threatening to downpour. Ah, Britain. So what do you wear when spring isn’t quite making an appearance and you can’t be dealing with the cold weather anymore? Take outfit inspiration from some of our favourite influencers, of course.

After trawling through their Instagram accounts, we managed to come up with 11 key looks that are ideal for any sort of changeable weather April might throw at us. From cool layered outfits to co-ords that are right for the office (and won’t have you freezing), there are plenty of ideas you’ll want to copy immediately. We’ve actually already begun incorporating them into our outfit rotations. Keep scrolling for everything you need to know on the subject of what to wear in April.

Style Notes: First up, April is the month to get acquainted with some clever layering. Think of lighter pieces that will keep you warm on chillier spring days. This look is exactly what we mean: a polished shirtdress worn with trousers and chic flats.

Just as good worn over trousers as it is without.

The perfect fit.

We’re still ballet pump obsessed, and Aeyde’s minimal pair are some of the best.

Style Notes: Still not ready to give up your cosy clothes post-winter? Right now there is a load of slouchy suits around that are still smart enough for work or drinks. Just pair with fisherman sandals or loafers, depending on the forecast.

I keep seeing this suit on all of Instagram’s most stylish.

You’ll wear these trousers on repeat.

The Row’s bestselling sandals are back in stock, but not for long.

Style Notes: Slip skirts might feel fancy, but that doesn’t mean you need to stash them away—they look the springtime part paired with a leather jacket and oversized shirt.

A leather blazer feels more polished than a biker jacket.

Size up and wear loosely and open.

You’ll never regret having a satin midi skirt in your wardrobe.

Style Notes: The denim shirt rarely goes out of fashion. It’s an ideal top option, too, as it gives you a bit of warmth without making you feel boiling if the sun finally decides to make an appearance. Take a leaf out of Aïda’s book, and wear it with your favourite jeans and tan accessories.

Simple, stylish, effective.

We’re convinced, H&M have some of the best jeans on the high-street.

These should be considered a spring staple.

Style Notes: Bright shirts are a major trend for spring/summer 2022 and will instantly make your outfits feel fresh. Now that bare-leg season is imminent, why not embrace two trends in one outfit with a bright shirt and a miniskirt?

Such a good shade of purple.

A skirt that will go with everything.

You can’t go wrong with a mid-heel mule. It meets just about any dress code.

Style Notes: The easiest accessory combo right now? Ankle boots and an equally polished bag, of course. Best paired with a comfy co-ord such as Thandi’s from By Malene Birger.

Move quickly, this co-ord has been flying out of stock since it landed.

How expensive does this skirt look?

Perhaps the perfect black leather ankle boot.

Style Notes: It comes as no surprise that dresses are super popular around springtime. But how to wear them right now? Emma Rose Thatcher’s option is one of our favourites—just pair your frock with some cool sneakers and layered jewellery.

Make the most of spring in seasonal colours and pretty florals.

The kind of versatile white trainer to wear with everything.

Style Notes: A bright knit is all you need to make a statement until the weather perks up. We recommend neutralising vivid hues with ecru trousers and gold jewellery.

The green ombré feels so fresh.

I have a theory that ecru might take over blue jeans for spring.

These huggies will dress up even a simple white tee.

Style Notes: As we’ve already established, bright shirts are trending this season and present the perfect way to make some of your wintry wears—say, a pair of leather trousers—feel more up-to-date for the current season.

Invest in linen now, and wear throughout spring and summer.

There’s no need for real leather when vegan leather looks this good.

Chunky trainers that add a little extra lift? We’ll take them.

Style Notes: Nothing says “spring” quite like a cream outfit. We don’t know about you, but we’d very much like to re-create this ensemble.

You had me at “organic silk”.

The slightly barrel leg makes this fit feel cooler than skinnies.

Going travelling? These deserve a spot in your suitcase.

Style Notes: With April showers being as omnipresent as they are, it pays to have a coat you can don should the heavens open. Of course, there are raincoats aplenty, but if you want something that feels more “fashion,” look to the fun, faux-leather styles currently populating the shopping circuit.

The best coats are statement ones.

Lounge in it, dress it up, wear it with a denim jacket, wear it with a trench. The possibilities are endless.

You read that correctly, these really are high-street.
