23 High-Street Loafers That Rival Their Designer Counterparts

There’s something immensely satisfying about a classic item of clothing you likely already have in your wardrobe being declared a new trend. Whether it’s a beige trench coat, or a wide-leg trouser, clearly, these sorts of items don’t need the additional PR. However, just like a silver-screen actor who wins a long-overdue Oscar, it’s nice to take a moment to appreciate those wardrobe heroes that have survived the decades. And this season, it’s the humble loafer’s turn to enjoy the spotlight.

With a history that stretches back to 1926 (reportedly first created as a household shoe for King George VI), the loafer might’ve started out as a menswear staple, but fast-forward 95 years, and it’s a shoe that has been well and truly embraced by womenswear designers. Prized for its streamlined minimalism and unisex appeal, it has become a go-to for adding polish to everything from denim to dresses.

Thanks to Prada, chunky soles became the popular silhouette for spring/summer 2021, and if this season’s street style shots are anything to go by, its popularity is set to continue through 2023. You’ll find plenty of affordable options from high-street brands such as & Other Stories and Arket, I personally can’t resist the minimalist charm of COS’ modern loafer, but wherever you find “the ones”, there’s always something so chic about the simplicity of a leather loafers paired with jeans and an oversized white shirt.

So if you’re looking for an easy shoe to add polish to your spring outfits, I would strongly recommend a loafer. I have pairs that are nearly 10 years old, which I bring out every year and still look as good as the first time I wore them. Whether you’re a platform-sole lover or crave a chunky chain detail, keeping scrolling to see and shop my edit of the best high-street loafers to buy now.

The perfect loafer does exist.

These look so premium.

All these penny loafers need is a chunky kit and a pair cropped jeans to show them at their best.

I love the clean white colourway and contrast sole.

A chunky, minimal loafer for everyday wear.

Suede is an equally chic alternative to patent leather.

The boxy, square toe makes these loafers feel much more modern.

Take a walk on the wild side in fun leopard print.

Just imagine how cool this two-tone pair would look with a sharp suit.

The perfect shoe for black and grey denim.

Every wardrobe should have a versatile pair like these.

This shape is so elegant.

A relaxed slip-on-meets-pump that guarantees comfy wear.

Add a little extra lift with a chunky block heel.

A real statement pair.

Vagabond are loafer experts, and the cocoa colour and basket weave detail set this pair apart from the rest.

A chic cream and modern pointed toe? Sign me up.

Before you add them to your basket in black, consider the khaki green. They’ll lift a simple outfit and make it feel instantly fresher.

Yes, they’re great for spring and summer, but you’ll wear these all winter too.

I saw Kendall and Katie in Vagabond’s Cosmo loafer, now I want Vagabond’s Cosmo loafer.

The croc-effect and buckle detail have this pair looking incredibly designer.

It’s easy to see why this playful pair are currently one of Dune’s bestsellers.

Just add a slouchy, ribbed sock and you’ve got an easy (and comfortable) pairing.
