Easy tips on how to dress better
It’s never a bad time to think about improving your style and learning how to dress better. In fact, one of the great pleasures of men’s style is that it’s a journey. And that’s just one of the things that makes it so enjoyable. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or a novice just getting into the game, these five tips are guaranteed to help you improve your style right now.
1. Cleaning your Closet
A thorough closet cleaning is the first thing you should do. Go through everything you own and if you haven’t worn something in the past year, get rid of it. If it’s been sitting around and you haven’t worn it, you’re most likely not going to wear it. Decluttering your closet and your drawers, makes room for other things and will help you simplify and focus on whats needed.
2. Identify What You Need
Identify what you have currently and what you need or want in the future. Make a list and prioritize how you’re going to budget for them. Several years ago when I did this wardrobe audit, I noticed that I had a lot of suits and jackets, but that among those, I lacked some basic pieces. Things like a grey flannel, navy hopsack, light grey fresco and brown linen suit were missing. After going through this process, I able to add those suits to my collection and ultimately expand the number of options I had throughout my entire wardrobe. I suggest doing it at least once a year. You won’t be disappointed.
3. Educate Yourself
There’s always something to learn in the world of men’s style. I find that most people who get involved want to know everything . They want to know how things work, how they’re made and all the subtle differences and intricacies that you find throughout men’s style. My advice is to watch as many videos and read as many books as you can. I think one of the hallmarks of a modern gentleman is curiosity. A curiosity about the things that he loves and the things he invests his time into. If you need more recommendations, check out the video we did on the 15 essential men’s style books.
4. Practice
Practice does not make perfect, but it makes you a whole lot better if you do. Understanding style and dressing yourself is no different then playing an instrument or competing in golf. They all take time and practice. It’s one thing to read books and understand something your head, but until you actually try it yourself and see the clothes on, you don’t have the same level of understanding.
Trying clothes on and looking at yourself in the mirror is the easiest way to learn what works for you. I do this all the time when I’m trying to find the right shoes. It sound a little weir but the more you practice, the easier it becomes. The time you put in now will pay big dividends for you down the road.
5. Take Care of Yourself (exercise, grooming, routine)
I have found over the years that there is a direct relationship between how I care for myself and how I feel. One of the reasons I think we like to dress well is because it makes us feel good. Taking pride in your appearance can give you the confidence to accomplish more. However, it’s not just the clothes that contribute to this. Exercising regularly, eating well and paying attention to your grooming are important routines which can have a positive impact. Routines, especially health related ones, keep your body feeling good and once you’ve adopted them your body will want to maintain one indefinitely. Take care of your body and it will show.
