9 Low-Key Outfits I'm Relying on This Winter

When it comes to styling everyday outfits for winter, there are a lot of variables to consider. 1) Staying warm is of the utmost importance. 2) Being able to move in your many, many layers is another key factor. And 3) looking stylish, which doesn’t have to fall to the bottom of your priority list. You’ll be pleased to hear that there is a way to tick off all of these winter-dressing multitudes, and that’s by following the exemplary outfits that I’ve laid out below.

Throwing open my wardrobe doors, I know I have all the pieces I need to create chic outfits this winter; what I’m lacking in is inspiration. As such, I’ve been saving casual winter outfit ideas on my Instagram for weeks now, and there are nine standout looks that I can’t wait to try—most of which I’m pretty sure I can assemble with pieces I already own or, at the very least, close alternatives.

Scroll below to see casual winter outfit ideas fashion people are already wearing, along with current shopping options for each should you find something you want to invest in that you don’t already own. Enjoy!

Style Notes: Quilted outerwear has dominated the past few winters and makes for the perfect cosy and casual cover-up. Pair with a sweatshirt, leggings and either flats or boots for an easy finish.

This Frankie Shop coat has been a bestseller for more than two winters, so much so it’s practically entered timeless territory.

I bought this recently and it’s become my preferred throw-on top.

I really rate H&M leggings.

Ballet flats were a big deal in the spring/summer 2023 designer collections, so these would certainly be a wise investment.

Style Notes: If trousers aren’t your thing that doesn’t mean you need to pack up your skirts for good—with knee-boots, tights and cosy layers up top, you can just as easily carry your minis and maxis with you into the winter season. Just add your favourite coat into the mix.

& Other Stories is known for having the best cardigans on the high street.

An elevated layering piece.

The comfiest skirt you’ll ever wear.

These will be crucial in so many of your winter outfits.

Style Notes: A jumper dress is the simplest and most-effective casual winter outfit. All you need to add is a pair of boots and cosy tights for extra warmth.

Chic, chic, chic.

Premium tights are so worth it, in my humble opinion.

Rain or snow, these boots won’t falter.

Style Notes: Shearling coats continue to fly off the shelves. There’s something about them that makes anything you wear them with look polished; even joggers and trainers.

Totême’s cult shearling jacket has just been released in this gorgeous chocolate brown colourway.

No contest, Pangaia does the best sweats.

Give your outfit on-trend flair with a pair of New Balance kicks.

Style Notes: Take your casual winter outfit cues from the ’90s with a baseball cap, loose-fit denim, a grey sweatshirt and an oversize tailored coat. This look feels very Princess Diana.

A cool-girl essential.

I’ve fallen hard for this sharply-tailored silhouette.

Navy Grey specialise in truly timeless knitwear and jumpers.

Wide-leg denim is a major mood for 2023.

Style Notes: Cargo trousers have been one of the biggest trends of the year; give them a wintery and elevated overhaul with the addition of a classic grey roll-neck and glossy boots.

A jumper you’ll pull out again and again.

COS’s bestselling bag is back in a delicious toffee hue.

Cargo trousers are taking a more streamline route this season.

These boots are high on my winter wish list.

Style Notes: Monochrome dressing—wearing one colour top-to-toe—is a favourite styling hack of influencers and celebrities. Take a wool blazer, match it to your trousers, and complete your low-key look with on-trend Uggs.

There’s something so luxe about a cream or white coat.

Cosy and cool.

The hardest boots to get your hands on this winter.

Style Notes: Built-in scarf jumpers are cropping up all over the shopping scene this season, but if you can’t find one that works for you, you can re-create this look with your go-to knit and a co-ordinating wrap-around scarf. Denim maxis were all over the spring/summer 2023 runways, too, so this is a look that’ll keep you looking current well into the spring.

Isn’t she a beauty?

Add patterned tights for an unexpected twist.

Mock croc never goes out of style.

Style Notes: Leather fabrications are my go-to for when I want to feel extra-toasty; they always manage to keep the heat in. This season, fashion people are getting their fix by way of leather (real or faux) outerwear, which goes perfectly with jeans and the chunky loafers you likely bought in the autumn.

The borg trimming on this coat sets it apart from the rest on the market.

These timeless jeans come in an extended size range.

The sole is ideal for navigating slippery pavements.
