Celebrities have a history of shying away from the expected on their wedding days, especially when it comes to their outfit choices. In 1959, Elizabeth Taylor married Eddie Fisher in a Las Vegas chapel wearing a green dress with a matching hood. In 1971, Bianca Jagger famously wore a YSL suit instead of a wedding dress.
That being said, in the last few years, Hollywood’s most recognizable names have become even more daring with their bridal looks. In 2014, singer Solange Knowles biked to her New Orleans wedding in an ivory Stéphane Rolland jumpsuit with a plunging neckline and a detachable cape. In 2018, Emily Ratajkowski got hitched in a $200 burnt orange pantsuit from Zara. A year later, Ozark actress Julia Garner got married in a turtleneck and ruffle-hem pants.
Ahead, check out the celebrities who chose to wear the unexpected for their big days.
Lily Allen
In September 2020, singer Lily Allen and Stranger Things actor David Harbour got married in Las Vegas. For their surprise ceremony, officiated by an Elvis impersonator, Allen chose a mod, double-breasted Dior mini dress, which she paired with a cropped veil and black, round-toe heels. Following the ceremony, the couple shared a meal in the In-N-Out Burger drive-through line.
Julia Garner
In December 2019, Ozark actress Julia Garner and musician Mark Foster got hitched at New York’s City Hall, where, according to Vogue , Garner’s parents tied the knot 40 years prior. For the occasion, Garner wore not one, but two looks, both of which were designed by CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund finalist Danielle Frankel.
According to the publication, Frankel DMed Garner on Instagram 10 days prior to the wedding to ask her if she’d found a wedding look yet. When she replied that she hadn’t, they became fast friends, leading to Frankel providing the actress with the looks she eventually got married in. “It was an Instagram miracle,” Garner told Vogue .
The result was a two-piece textured co-ord that included a tunic-style turtleneck top and wide-leg pants with ruffled details at the hems. For the reception, which took place at TriBeCa’s Locanda Verde restaurant, Garner wore a mini dress that was aptly called the Julia dress.
Sophie Turner
While Sophie Turner wore a traditional Louis Vuitton gown to her second wedding to Joe Jonas, her first wedding look was anything but traditional. Designed by Bevza, the white, silk jumpsuit featured spaghetti straps and a wrap-like design in the front. According to Diplo’s footage of the Las Vegas ceremony, Turner wore the one-piece with gold Loeffler Randall sandals and a cropped veil.
Zoë Kravitz
Though it wasn’t technically for her wedding day, High Fidelity star Zoë Kravitz did wear an out-there ‘fit — a white bandeau bra, paired with bike shorts, and a chain-link tunic layered on top — for her pre-wedding dinner in Paris in 2019. As for her wedding day, she wore a beautiful knee-length dress , which featured a round neck and a full skirt, with a bow headband and ballet flats.

Emily Ratajkowski
When model Emily Ratajkowski married actor and producer Sebastian Bear-McClard at City Hall in Manhattan back in 2018, she didn’t wear a fancy dress, nor did she wear a cutout piece from her line Inamorata. Instead, she went out and bought a $200 burnt orange Zara pantsuit made up of a double-breasted blazer and flared trousers.
Kaley Cuoco
In 2018, when The Flight Attendant star Kaley Cuoco married professional equestrian Karl Cook, she debuted two bridal looks. For the ceremony, she wore a more traditional gown with a matching lace cape. Later, for the reception, Cuoco changed into something a bit more daring: a fitted jumpsuit made entirely of lace.
Solange Knowles
For her 2014 New Orleans wedding to Alan Ferguson, Solange Knowles didn’t pick just one look. Rather, the “Crane In The Sky” singer wore several different bridal ensembles, including a caped Kenzo gown and a one-shoulder jumpsuit-dress hybrid. But the most non-traditional of all was a plunging jumpsuit by Stéphane Rolland, which she wore to bike to her ceremony.

Keira Knightley
When the Atonement star married Klaxons keyboard player James Righton in 2013 , she didn’t choose a big white gown to say “I do.” (Sadly, she didn’t wear that green dress from the film, either.) Instead, she wore a low-key strapless Chanel mini dress from the house’s spring ‘06 collection — a dress that she’d also already worn before. In 2008, Knightley attended a pre-BAFTAs dinner, where she wore the dress with black tights, round-toe heels, and a black coat. The dress was apparently her “something old,” while the tweed jacket — custom made by Karl Lagerfeld himself — worn with it on her wedding day was her “something new.”
Knightley then recycled her wedding dress a third time, wearing it to the 2013 SeriousFun London Gala alongside Righton.
Kristen Bell
And the bride wore… a black tunic with trousers. In 2013, when everyone’s favorite comedy couple Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard tied the knot in a civil ceremony at the Beverly Hills courthouse, Shepard wore a classic black-and-white tux. Bell, on the other hand, opted out of the formal dress code, and wore a casual, but chic blouse-and-trousers combination with a silver necklace.
