Blue Jays’ Thornton to start in place of Stripling vs. Rays

The Toronto Blue Jays will turn to Trent Thornton for Monday’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays.

Ross Stripling was scheduled to start for the Blue Jays in the series finale against the Rays. The team has an open rotation spot for Wednesday’s game against the New York Yankees.

In six starts this season, Stripling has an 0-3 record with a 7.20 ERA, 29 strikeouts and eight walks in 25 innings of work. Thornton has made 14 appearances this season, including two starts, going 1-1 with a 2.70 ERA with 22 strikeouts and eight walks in 23.1 innings.

Toronto is on a five-game losing streak and will look to avoid a sweep against the Rays who scored four runs in the ninth inning to earn their 10th straight win on Sunday.
