If You're Looking for a New Winter Coat, These Are the Best Brands

The one fashion question I’m asked the most by my friends is, “Where is the best place to buy a winter coat?” Whatever budget you’re working within, a winter coat tends to take up a large chunk of your clothing costs, and so it’s a purchase that takes some consideration.

Whether you’re able to invest in a luxury label or want to find the best the high street has to offer, below, you’ll find the 12 brands that I think you can always depend on when it comes to outerwear. It’ll be no surprise to you that a Max Mara coat is the ultimate purchase. However, at the contemporary level, I’m also always impressed by London-based label Shrimps, new name from Copenhagen Stand Studio and solid investment option Joseph. When it comes to the high street, the Scandinavian brands really do coats like no other, as Arket, COS and & Other Stories are my go-tos.

Keep scrolling for the 12 coat brands that I think you can always rely on to deliver on both style and quality.

Let’s start with the best of the best, shall we? Italian fashion brand Max Mara creates the most beautiful coats, whether you’re after a cosy teddy bear coat or a classic camel belted style.

Totême was created by fashion blogger Elin Kling and has quickly become a favourite for wardrobe staples. Jennifer Lawrence has the Annecy wool coat, confirming it as one of the most sought-after coats out there.

On the high street, & Other Stories offers the perfect selection of coats, from classic to statement. The belted wool-blend coats, in particular, are a best seller every year.

Contemporary label Stand Studio was launched in 2014 and creates beautiful, impactful faux-fur coats. From bright colours to statement shearling, these are coats for people who want something head-turning.

COS is known for its simple, minimalist basics. However, that doesn’t mean the coats lack personality—its navy trench coat this season is pure perfection.

For those willing to spend on their winter coat, I recommend you start your search at Joseph.

Back to high-street heroes, season after season Whistles is where we turn for coat inspiration.

When it comes to puffer and quilted coats, Arket has the best offering this year.

Harris Wharf’s traditional tailored coats are made in Turin, Italy, and are the perfect choice if you’re looking for something classic. Meghan Markle is also a fan.

If you want your coat to make an entrance, you won’t find anything as fun as a Shrimps coat. Prints! Collars! Embellishments! They are as fabulous as it gets.

I always think that Zara’s strong point is its selection of coats, and this year is no different.

This year, many will be looking for a practical coat given current restrictions, and if you’re after a durable raincoat, Rains is a firm favourite here at Who What Wear.
