9 Buzzy Winter Trends That You Can Start Wearing Now

If you haven’t already marked it in your diary, here’s a little reminder that the clocks go back tomorrow. And while I will certainly be mourning the dwindling daylight hours, I will also be secretly looking forward to fishing out my favourite chunky knits, sturdy boots and cocooning coats as the mercury starts to drop. Winter is almost here, and it’s time to embrace the cosy. You know you want to.

We don’t really believe in items of clothing being explicitly “in” or “out” here at Who What Wear. However, we do like to take the opportunity to try new things as a new season arrives. That might mean swapping your faithful beige knits for a brighter shade or digging out your old bomber jacket and giving it a 2021 update with a midi skirt and chunky boots. After all, almost all fashion trends come and go; it’s just about finding ways to make something feel fresh. For me, this has manifested in experimenting with lower-slung jeans and trousers, i.e., nicking my husband’s black-tie trousers and styling them up with a slouchy knit (sorry, Dan). I’ve also been inspired to revisit my teenage love for miniskirts, except for A/W 21, I’ll be adding platform loafers and a roll-neck. It’s all about finding joy in the new season and relishing the opportunity to press reset. To get you started, I’ve rounded up nine trends that I’m personally excited about trying this winter. I’ve been on the lookout for an XXL roll-neck to style with miniskirts and chunky boots this season. Whether you stick to a neutral or embrace a pop of colour, this is sure to become a wardrobe staple.

From Kermit green to cobalt blue, colours have gone super saturated this winter. If going head-to-toe is too intimidating, try pairing one vibrant piece with a neutral such as beige or cream.

You heard it here first: The bomber is back. I love COS’s oversized iteration, which would look supremely chic with tailored black trousers, or make like Celine and throw it together with an ankle-grazing skirt.

A mini might not seem like an obvious winter choice, but this year they’re being styled-up with tights, sturdy combat boots and chunky knits. Cosy and cool.

We’re going back to school with this preppy knitwear trend. Our favourite cardis come long-line and a little loose—all they need is a pleated midi skirt and knee-high boots.

It might sound scary, but low-slung jeans can look very cool, especially when they come in a baggier fit styled with minimalist staples, such as boxy blazers or shirts.

A shearling coat is one of those outwear staples that never go out of style, but we have to say that Totême’s leather-trim, A/W 21 offering is looking particularly tempting. Just add to your fave jeans.

For the first party season in a while, we’re reaching for sequins. Keep things looking modern with a shimmery top and low-slung, wide-leg trousers.

Another winter trend and another wardrobe classic. The main point of difference with this season’s knee-high-boot offering is that they come with a lower heel, which means extra comfort (never a bad thing) without compromising on style.
