Five To Watch: Canadians going for gold on Day 3 of Beijing Olympics

There’s no shortage of intriguing Canadian storylines on Day 3 of the Beijing Olympics.

Along with a wide range of medal possibilities, Rachel Homan and John Morris play a must-win mixed doubles curling round-robin game finale Italy at 8:05 p.m. ET on Sunday and the Canadian women’s hockey team returns to action against the Russians just over three hours later at 11:10 p.m. ET. If Homan and Morris win, their semifinal will be Monday at 7:05 a.m. ET.

Here’s a look at some of the Canadians striving to hit the podium on Day 3:

Madeline Schizas
Figure skating team final, women’s free skate, 10:35 p.m. ET (Sunday)
The 18-year-old from Oakville, Ont., pushed Canada into the five-team final with a third-place showing in the women’s short in her Olympic debut on Saturday. Canada sits fourth with pairs, ice dance and the women’s free skate wrapping up the competition.

Broderick Thompson
Men’s alpine ski downhill, 11 p.m. ET (Sunday)
After a postponement on Saturday because of high winds, organizers will give it another go. Thompson, from Whistler, B.C., was third in the final training run this week. He has a bronze medal in Super G on the World Cup circuit this year.

Mark McMorris, Sebastien Toutant, Max Parrot
Men’s slopestyle snowboard final, 11 p.m. ET (Sunday)
Three Canadians have advanced to the 12-man final. Parrot was second and McMorris third in this event at the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics.
