What to watch on Day 12: Canada-Sweden hockey showdown, Hamelin’s finale

It’s crunch time at the Beijing Olympics.

As we hit the home stretch, some of Canada’s most prominent athletes are facing elimination or coming down to their last chance to hit the podium.

Here’s a look at five key Canadian stories to follow on Day 12.

Editor’s note: All times are Eastern Time on Wednesday unless otherwise noted.

Jennifer Jones
Women’s curling, vs. U.S., 8:05 p.m. (Tuesday), vs. China, 7:05 a.m.
The Winnipeg skip got herself back into semifinal contention with two wins on Day 10 to raise her record to 3-3 with three round-robin games left. The Americans are tied for the fourth and final playoff spot at 4-3, so Jones’ Day 12 opener is huge.

Max Moffatt
Men’s freestyle ski slopestyle final, 8:30 p.m.
The native of Guelph, Ont., squeezed into the 12-man final by finishing 11th in qualifying on Day 11. Eleventh is also where he finished in this event last year at the World Championships.

Kim Boutin
Women’s short-track speedskating 1,500 metres, quarterfinals at 6:30 a.m., semifinals at 7:15 a.m., finals at 8:11 a.m.
Boutin has a bronze medal in the 500 metres and two fourth-place finishes in relays in Beijing. She took bronze in this event at the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics. Boutin is looking to win her fifth career Olympic medal.

Charles Hamelin
Men’s short-track speedskating 5,000-metre relay, finals at 7:32 a.m.
Hamelin, 37, has one more chance to tie a Canadian record by winning his sixth career Olympic medal. He has been part of previous relay teams that have won Olympic gold, silver and bronze at this event.

Canadian men’s hockey team
Quarterfinal, vs. Sweden, 8:30 a.m.
After an easy first elimination game against China, Canada faces a rested Swedish team. Sweden did not win its group after blowing a 3-0 lead in an overtime loss against Finland, but the Swedes still got a bye to the quarterfinals by finishing as the top second-place team.
