Printed Shirts Are Trending—How I Wear Mine Again and Again

I really love vintage fashion and classic styles that will see me through each season without getting tired or boring. One of the key pieces I find myself always gravitating towards is a Cuban-collar shirt. Mine is from Rixo and has been my favourite since I got it last year, and the fact that it’s silk is such a bonus, as you can dress it up or down easily.

I love the clashing colours and the abstract mermaid print, which is so timeless I know I’ll have this in my wardrobe for years to come. Sadly, this shirt is now out of stock (be sure to check Depop and eBay, though—you might get lucky!), but I’ve found a chic substitute, also from Rixo, which, knowing how much wear I get out of the original, I’m tempted to invest in.

Part of Rixo’s Bon Voyage collection, this shirt boasts a beautiful, hand-painted motif of retro blooms and a tropical landscape perfect for summer.

Keep scrolling to see the five ways I’m styling my printed, short-sleeve shirt right now.

Style Notes: When the sun makes an appearance in Scotland, or wherever you live in the UK, you have to grab your opportunity and get the shorts out! I love these cotton boxer-style shorts paired with my printed shirt. It’s a really laid-back look, but you can elevate it with a pair of heels.

The varied colours in this print allow for so many styling options.

I also love the look of bralettes worn underneath unbuttoned shirts.

The subtle stripes will provide a sophisticated print clash.

Block heels are ideal if you plan on wearing mules for extended periods.

Style Notes: I’ve really embraced colour as I’ve gotten older, and having pieces like these yellow jeans in my wardrobe has been the best way for me to make dressing more fun. I love how the colours in the shirt really stand out against the yellow but flow really nicely together. Take a couple of buttons out of the shirt to make the whole look feel more laid-back.

The double-breasted button closure isn’t something you see a lot of, making this shirt all the more covetable.

The perfect finishing touch to any look.

These sunny strides always lift my mood.

I barely take off my chunky flip-flops in the summer months—this Russell & Bromley pair makes for a sound investment.

Style Notes: If I could live in any outfit, it would be this one. I really love the vintage, Americana vibe it has. A printed shirt is such a great layer that makes wearing a basic white vest and jeans feel cool and effortless. You can never go wrong with this combo.

The design on this shirt was painted by one of Rixo’s co-founders. Remember that tidbit for when people inevitably compliment you on it.

A basic every wardrobe needs for summer outfit styling.

I, like so many influencers I know, swear by Agolde’s Pinch jeans.

A more frugal leather flip-flip option.

Style Notes: My husband calls this my Harry Styles look, which I take as a huge compliment. I find the way the Cuban collar sits perfectly under the V-neck very pleasing and love the contrasting textures of the soft shirt and wool paired together. Personally, I think this is a great pairing for those days when you need an extra layer but don’t want to completely cover up.

Love this print? You’ll be pleased to hear there’s also a matching skirt.

I also enjoy styling this on its own with the striped shorts from my first look.

Gorgeous jeans that come in extended sizing.

If money’s no object…

Style Notes: Whenever I get dressed up, I like to feel comfortable and not too polished, so this is the perfect balance for me. I love the contrast of the black linen mini with the bold print. Tucking the shirt into the skirt ties the whole look together with some strappy heels thrown in for good measure.

I don’t know what else I can say about this shirt other than I’m in love with it.

An easy way to stack your necklaces—invest in a readymade piece.

The little vent is a welcome addition on hot days.

You can never go wrong with white or ecru shoes, as they go with just about everything and, often, look less harsh than black leather.
