Cardinals’ Goldschmidt, Arenado to miss series vs. Blue Jays due to vaccination status

St. Louis Cardinals all-stars Nolan Arenado and Paul Goldschmidt will miss the team’s two-game road series against the Toronto Blue Jays due to their vaccination status, president of baseball operations John Mozeliak told local media on Zoom Sunday.

Much like the United States, Canada has restrictions on travelers who aren’t vaccinated against COVID-19.

Catcher Austin Romine will also not be travelling to Toronto for the same reason, while pitcher Johan Oviedo cannot enter the country due to an expired passport.

Arenado, Goldschmidt and Romine will be placed on the restricted list and forfeit pay and major league service time in accordance with the terms of MLB’s collective bargaining agreement.

Romine joined the Cardinals earlier this season as backup for the injured Yadier Molina, who is expected to rejoin the team next month.

The Kansas City Royals recently left 10 players behind for a series in Toronto, bumping the number of major leaguers not making the trip to Canada this season because of vaccination status up to 35.

Goldschmidt currently leads the Cardinals in most offensive categories, including batting average (.333), home runs (22), RBIs (74), on-base percentage (.416) and hits (116). Arenado has 102 hits, 18 home runs and 59 RBIs.
