Serena Williams falls to Bencic in final match on Canadian soil

Tennis legend Serena Williams lost 6-2, 6-4 to No. 12 seed Belinda Bencic in the second round of the National Bank Open in Toronto Wednesday.

Williams announced Tuesday she would be stepping away from the game following next month’s U.S. Open, making this appearance her final match on Canadian soil.

A sold-out centre-court crowd was clearly in Williams’ corner Wednesday but Bencic, who now has a 29-13 record in 2022, controlled the play for most of the match.
