Cardigans Are All I Want to Wear Right Now—These Are My Favourites

The cardigan was long considered one of the frumpiest things you could wear, but after an endorsement by Miuccia Prada and dozens more, they’ve become a chic staple. The cult cardigan became a thing in 2019, thanks to Katie Holmes and her Khaite set and a string of other sellout cardis. Years later and the humble cardigan is still one of our favourite piece to wear.

The key to making this item look relevant is to opt for soft-looking knitwear, which is as cosy as possible—the appeal of Katie Holmes’s infamous cardi is just how soft it is. Although you can’t beat beige, burgundy, and grey cardigans that are fitted to the body with small buttons, we’re also loving the jazzier vintage-style varieties available, too. Cardigans in punchy colours are trending this season, such as shades of fuchsia, bold green, mint, and lilac. We’re also really into printed and checked cardigans if you want something a little more out of the ordinary.

Influencers can’t seem to get enough of them, either, as they keep wearing them in a multitude of ways. Keep scrolling to get all the cardigan outfit inspiration you need, then proceed to shop the best cardigans of 2022…

Style Notes: This ribbed beige cardigan looks amazing with just a pair of hoops and dark-wash jeans.

Style Notes: Soraya’s pastel check cardigan is seriously cute—and we love her matching pretty scrunchie on her wrist.

Style Notes: We love how Abi wears a classic cream and black cardigan with gold buttons with black cycling shorts.

Style Notes: Lucy Williams wears a floral-embellished Mango cardigan from last year—note how she buttons it up all the way to the top.

Style Notes: Cardigans with pearl button detailing and puff sleeves are proving popular this year.

Style Notes: Eni wears an old season Zara cardigan and matching knit top which is adorned with sweet floral embroidery.

Style Notes: French girls like Adenorah often tuck their cardigans into the waistbands of their jeans.

Style Notes: This Zara crop top–and-cardigan set was a huge sellout in 2019—and we are still just as obsessed with knitted cardigan sets.

Style Notes: Ada pairs her cropped cardigan with another key item—a high-waist denim midi skirt.

Style Notes: Wear a cardigan with nothing underneath for a sexier look and add a statement necklace.

Style Notes: This Arket checked cardigan looks amazing with a brown roll-neck and turned-up jeans for autumn.

Style Notes: You can’t beat a cream cardigan paired with white jeans. Simple, but oh-so good.

Style Notes: This Arket fitted cardigan looks amazing half buttoned with high-waisted jeans.

I’m very into the matching top-and-cardi look. Shop the matching top (£205).

This chunky knit looks great buttoned all the way up.

An elegant wrap needs nothing underneath.

I’m not sure what I’m more obsessed with. The teal green or the fitted design.

How soft does this look?

The softest combination.

This colour is so good.

Do all the buttons up to show off the beautifully sculpted neckline.

Classic, but never boring.

Add a little whimsy with this green cardi with gold apple motif buttons.

A relaxed fit for ultimate comfort.

This looks as soft as a cloud.

A must for french-girl style. Tuck into jeans to complete the ensemble.

An easy co-ord makes getting dressed so much easier. Just add jeans.

Trust Ganni to create a standout cardigan.

The staple black cardigan that every wardrobe needs.

A triumph in colour-blocking.

The contrast between the simple top and patterned sleeves is so good.

A lightweight option that can be layered over dresses.

The asymmetric centre is a fresh touch.

Style with a satin midi skirt and chunky boots for autumn.

Wear open, or with a simple bow to close.

I’ll take the whole look, please.
