I’m in the market for a new coat but I have some firm non-negotiable stipulations ahead of purchasing. Firstly, my next coat cannot be super-expensive but it must be premium and long-lasting. It absolutely has to be a classic style that I won’t bore of by next winter—I’ve bought into trending styles before and lived to regret it. I’d like it to feel more fancy than the puffer I’ve lived in for the past few winters, and, whatever style I do end up landing on, it needs to be made of wool because there is no greater fibre option for a piece of outerwear that can remain looking good in your wardrobe for a long, long time to come. Oversized styles are proving to be the shape of our times—perfect for layering up with knits underneath when the temperatures require it. Belted fastens are timeless but omnipresent, flattering too. If you can find something with a shawl collar or an in-built scarf you’ll have an iteration that feels more on-trend for now, but these details have remained stylish for many decades now.
