Australia joins France in advancing from Group D at World Cup

With a 1-0 upset win over Denmark Wednesday, Australia has secured a spot as runners-up in Group D, advancing to the World Cup knockout stage alongside group winners France. It’s Australia’s first time advancing to the knockout stage since the 2006 World Cup.

Winger Mathew Leckie broke the deadlock in the 60th minute after juking a couple Danish defenders on the counter-attack and slotting a shot low to the bottom right corner past ‘keeper Kasper Schmeichel.

Australia will now face the Group C winner, while France takes on the Group C runner-up in Round of 16 action. Group C action wraps up later Wednesday.

More to come.
