My Mum and I Always End Up With the Same Zara Buys—Here's What We Like Now

My mum and I appear to have the exact same taste in Zara. Sometimes it happens by pure coincidence—last like winter when we both snapped up the same red knitted off-the-shoulder dress without communicating about it—while at other points we simply copy each other’s successes. When you’re short and fussy about clothes (both guilty!), recommendations are what keep the wheels of your wardrobe turning—neither of us likes to waste time nor closet space on items that simply don’t work hard enough for the money.

I’m 37 and she’s an age she probably doesn’t want me to state publicly, but she’s always been stylish and has never wanted to retreat into the archetypal uniform of her generation. As Zara offers an elevated view on affordable fashion and will often lean into producing classic items that feel a little more grown-up that its comp set, it’s no great wonder that we both find some solid options at the Spanish store. What’s more is that from an aesthetic point of view, we’ve always appreciated the same looks, silhouettes and finishes in fashion.

My mum and me in the same Zara dress and jacket. I’d say our outfits centre on silhouettes that feature modest hemlines (we also both love a sleeve) and fit around the waist. When it comes to the finer details, we like pieces that come in unfussy colours, unique patterns (not an obvious floral, for example) and are free of excess embellishment—the idea is that whatever we invest in is as seasonless and timeless as possible. All of these design notes feel all suited to our short statures and hourglass figures, and although my mum is considerably slimmer and a good few sizes smaller than me, we gravitate towards the same few items. So below is a roundup of what’s on our joint most-looked-at list right now…

Up next, Zara really wants you to wear these winter trends.
