The 9 Major Summer Trends Instagram's Best Dressed Are Wearing Right Now

I can’t quite believe it but, it’s finally summer, and with the new year well underway, there’s a whole new set of trends to get excited about, it’s hard to ignore the excitement of longer, brighter days, and easy, breezy outfits.

The good news is, you don’t have to wait until it’s above 30 degrees outside to start wearing said trends. In fact, we’ve already spotted nods to this year’s predicted hits on Instagram, styled in ways that make them feel really wearable for the here and now.

But let’s take it back a step and talk about the trends. Fashion Month told a tale of opposing halves; on the one hand, designers like Christopher Kane and Jil Sander adopted a no-holds-barred approach, adorning their garments with sequins and embellishment, fashioning maximalist silhouettes from high-shine fabrics and generally inviting us to partake in year-round party dressing.

But alongside these fun-filled collections, other labels like The Row and Bottega Veneta focused on wardrobe fundamentals. ’90s minimalism is still at play, this time executed in muted tones and with a healthy splash of Noughties flair. Think low-slung waistlines and plenty of tube tops.

Most importantly, the catwalks taught us that we don’t have to pick a side. Even the most minimalist dressers have a magpie streak, and those with a dramatic fashion sense still need the basics to build their looks around. Needless to say, it’s all very exciting—but imagining runway looks working in ‘real life’ can be a challenge. So, we’ve collated some examples of how influencers are already styling 2023’s leading trends. Did we mention we’re excited?

Style Notes: Since the first white tank made its way down the Prada F/W ’22 runway, it was immediately reinvented from dated basic to wardrobe staple. While there wasn’t much call for it during autumn and winter, its about to be everywhere this summer, especially when worn with midi skirts, wide-leg trousers and cotton shorts (but more on those later).

The Who What Wear editor’s tank of choice.

I love the thick quality.

Logo lovers and Y2K devotees alike will be head over heels for Fiorucci’s pared-back vintage tank.

You can’t go wrong with two for the price of one.

Style Notes: Like it or loathe it, crochet is back by popular demand, and it’s had a chic upgrade. Forget its Woodstock festival connotations, and try this season’s crochet shirt–polished, practical and deniably cool, it manages to elevate crochet from arts and crafts to downright cool.

There’s nothing not to love about this Chloé shirt.

This shirt + wide-leg linen trousers = dream summer outfit.

The best thing about a button-up is its versatility. Wear on its own as a top, or open over a tank.

This cute, cropped shirt is perfect for pairing with high-waisted bottoms.

Style Notes: The best thing about getting dressed for summer is its effortlessness, and there is no more nonchalant, lazy girl outfit than the shirts and shorts co-ord. Only one step up from pyjamas in its light fabric and slouchy fit, the look was originally made popular by luxe brands like Deiji Studios and Toteme who made PJs and loungewear so good we wanted to wear it outdoors too.

Who better to design a shirt/short co-ord than a tailoring specialist?

The OG linen set.

Wear these black shorts with everything from bandeau tops to swimwear, or pair it with the matching black shirt.

I just love this shade of sage green.

Style Notes: Seen on the runway in collections by Victoria Beckham, Rejina Pyo and more, this calming yellow is the ultimate mood-boosting hue, plus it feels suitable for all seasons. Wear it in slip dress form now with heels and a neutral blazer, like Hannah Stefansson.

Simply exquisite.

This will really pop on gloomy days.

You could create a fun colourful look around this bag.

An easy way to introduce this trend into your wardrobe.

Style Notes: Splotchy, head-spinning prints are set to coat all kinds of clothing in 2023 thanks to their prominence in multiple spring/summer 2023 shows such as Prada, Roksanda and Peter Do. I love how Lauren Nicole has maximised the boldness of this trend by pairing her blur-patterned dress with an electric blue coat.

This complementary colour combo is truly seasonless.

A summer sunset in a dress.

Very Y2K, in the best way.

An evening showstopper.

Style Notes: As much attention as wide-leg trousers are getting, we’re also seeing slimmer pants squeeze their way into the spotlight. Expect mini flares and perfectly-cut skinnies in amongst the puddle pants.

Everyone needs a great pair of tailored trousers.

Just add a blouse and loafers for a smart everyday look.

Leather trousers are a must-have this season, especially in a skinnier fit like the above.

Easy to dress up and down.

Style Notes: One word to describe ’80s fashion? Fun! Channel Molly Ringwald and go all-out with your flashy accessories, puffy sleeves and shiny fabrications.

This will totally transform even the simplest outfit.

London based jeweller Ysso have teamed up with Danielle Copperman on a collection of statement pieces with plenty of vintage appeal. I’d wear the Clos earrings with a long, fitted black dress and a cinched waist.

These paperclip link chains are perfect for layering.

Our entire team is swooning over these elegant sunglasses.

Style Notes: Hiding your bra is so passé. Seriously though, the rules have been broken and we’re predicting that summer 2023 will be all about confidence-boosting bralettes and ultra-crop tops. In the meantime, throw a blazer on top to keep the cool at bay.

An easy-to-style option.

Let a hint of denim peek out from under an ivory blazer.

Commando just made a compelling case in favour of the strapless, bandeau bralette. Imagine how good this would look with a long skirt.

Yes that’s right, this is Katie Holmes’ iconic cashmere bra, but in neutral oatmeal. Wear with an oversized shirt or an open cardigan to channel her unforgettable look.

Style Notes: The moto jacket just got a new look, and it feels pretty Formula One-inspired. Switch your plain biker out for a two-tone leather cover-up and get playful with styling. Emili Sindlev shows us how it’s done for evening, and after seeing similar styles on the runway from Gucci, David Koma and Louis Vuitton, you best believe I’m investing in one stat.

This jacket will instantly boost your cool credenials.

Chuck on over your floral dresses to toughen things up.

I adore the vintage feel of this unique piece.

The bolder the better.
