French Women Rely On This

When the autumn chill descends, I always have the best fashion intentions. But somehow, I find myself relying on jeans for every single outfit. This year, I’m determined to do things differently and mix up my wardrobe staples with some new classics. And when it comes to the classics, who better to turn to for sartorial inspiration than the French? Turns out, their favourite autumnal trouser style is none other than corduroys.

Julie’s corduroy suit is seriously sophisticated.

As a Nineties kid, corduroys tend to remind me of outfits I was begrudgingly forced to wear by my mother, but over the past few years I’ve noticed more and more of my favourite French tastemakers making the style look enviably chic. Paired with an oversized, slouchy jumper and boots, or a button-down shirt and ballet flats, the textured trouser looks seriously polished, and strikes the perfect balance of classic and contemporary.

Camille fuses London and Parisian style with a layered shirt and jumper, leather jacket and trainers.

Turns out, corduroys are one of the most hard-working styles you can have in your wardrobe. Not only are they incredibly warm and sturdy—meaning they’re more than up to the task of standing up to elements—but they can be styled in so many ways. Follow Camille Charriere’s lead put a London spin on them with trainers and a leather biker, or go full Parisian glam with a monochromatic look, courtesy of a matching knit or tailored blazer.

A monochromatic dream—Julie shows how to take corduroys on a night out.

Fortunately, this season there’s a plethora of styles to choose from at every price-point. Corduroys are meant to be classic, so I advise opting for a warm, versatile tone and a cut that makes you feel your best. From flares to culottes, scroll on to find my pick of the best cords

Embrace the aesthetic of winter whites with this wide-leg pair.

For those who prefer a cropped cut. Pair with chunky boots and a leather jacket.

Add heeled boots and a turtleneck jumper et voilà.

These would look great with a buttoned up cardigan and ballet flats.

This sand tone is so versatile.

Corduroys that have Sienna Miller’s seal of approval are must-haves in my eyes.
