Live updates: Canada takes on Greece to start men’s basketball campaign

It all starts here for the Canadian men’s basketball team.

Coming into Paris with high expectations and the best roster the country has ever put together, Canada will open its Olympic journey and quest for its first medal since 1936 with a matchup against Greece and superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo.

A solid pre-Olympics exhibition run that saw the Canadians beat Puerto Rico and France but lose the United States won’t matter as all records flip back to 0-0.

Placed into Group A, they’ll have to battle tooth and nail against basketball powerhouses Spain and Australia as well as this opening match against Greece should they want to advance to the knockout stages and contend for a medal.

Follow along here for live updates on key moments for Canada’s opening game at Paris 2024.

SCORE: Canada 8, Greece 5

1st Quarter

• 7:08 — Greece is on the board. Giannis Antetokounmpo and his otherworldly gravity draw the double-team and he finds Kostas Papanikolaou in the corner for the three-ball.

• 8:10 — Canada is finding their spots early on. That’s two straight buckets from mid-range jumpers at the free-throw line, one from Dillon Brooks and one from Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. Great start, 6-0 Canada.

• 9:29 — RJ Barrett has a full circle moment, scores the first basket of the game and Canada’s first Olympic basket since his father was part of the 2000 Canadian team.

• 10:00 — And we’re off! Dwight Powell gets up and wins the opening tip for Canada.
