Super Saturday at Olympics: Day 8 highlights, schedule

The middle Saturday of a Summer Olympics always delivers plenty of drama.

This year will be no exception.

Day 8 has the potential to be the most exciting day on the Paris 2024 schedule for Canada.

The much-anticipated women’s soccer quarterfinal between Canada and Germany at 1 p.m. ET / 10 a.m. PT will start before at least three serious medal opportunities in the pool and on the track.

Here are the highlights, along with the schedule.

(All times Eastern)

Damian Warner (track and field, decathlon, 4:05 a.m.-3:45 p.m.)

The Canadian sits fourth entering the second and final day of the event. He has an uphill climb if he wants to win back-to-back gold medals at the Olympic.

Canadian women’s eight team (rowing final, 4:50 a.m.)

The reigning Olympic champs finished second in a repechage to qualify for the six-boat final.

Andre De Grasse (track and field, men’s 100 metres, 5:55 a.m.)

The Canadian star makes his first Paris appearance in the heats. De Grasse is not considered a medal favourite this year.

Melissa Humana-Paredes and Brandie Wilkerson (women’s beach volleyball, 11 a.m., vs. Latvia)

Canada’s top beach team is 1-1 entering its final game of the preliminary round.

Canadian 3×3 women’s basketball team (vs. Azerbaijan, 11:30 a.m.)

Canada lost two overtime games on Friday to fall to 3-3. This is its last preliminary-round game. Canada is tied for fourth in the eight-team field and can guarantee at least a spot in a play-in game with a win.

Felix Auger-Aliassime (tennis, men’s singles bronze-medal match around noon ET / 9 a.m. PT.)

The Canadian faces Lorenzo Musetti of Italy in a battle for bronze. Auger-Aliassime leads the all-time series 3-2.

Canadian women’s soccer team (quarterfinal vs. Germany, 1 p.m.)

In the midst of a drone spying scandal involving its coaches and having six points docked by FIFA, Canada went 3-0 in the preliminary round to advance. Can this improbable run continue?

Josh Liendo (swimming, men’s 100-m butterfly, 2:30 p.m.)

The Canadian won silver in this event at the 2023 world championships and bronze in 2022.

Summer McIntosh, (swimming, women’s 200-m IM, 3:08 p.m.)

The Canadian teen looks for her fourth medal in Paris. She hasn’t specialized in this event in recent years.
