McDavid says Matthews is a ‘great’ choice for Maple Leafs captain

Despite being rivals on the ice, one hockey superstar isn’t afraid to give credit where it’s due.

Edmonton Oilers star Connor McDavid opened up on Tuesday about newly appointed Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews, calling him a “great” choice to wear the “C.”

“First and foremost, he’s an amazing player, great player, but he’s a great person, highly intelligent, loves the game, loves the Leafs,” McDavid said at the NHL North American Media Tour in Las Vegas. “I think he’s a great captain.”

The Oilers centre added that Matthews has the necessary aura to represent both the city of Toronto and the Leafs organization.

“He’s definitely got a little bit more style than maybe I do, and Toronto’s a stylish city,” McDavid said. “I think he represents the city great and the team.”

It’s safe to say that Matthews is in his prime, heading into his ninth season in the NHL. Since joining the Leafs in 2006, the 26-year-old has won the Calder Trophy, the Hart Trophy, the Rocket Richard Trophy and the Ted Lindsay Award. The Arizona-raised forward is also coming off a season where he set career records in goals (69) and points (107).

In August, Matthews was named the franchise’s 26th captain, succeeding John Tavares.
