Alonso’s go-ahead homer helps Mets eliminate Brewers, advance to NLDS

What a week it’s been for the New York Mets.

After eking into the playoffs on an extra regular season day, the Miracle Mets once again rallied late to eliminate the Milwaukee Brewers 3-2 in Game 3 of their wild-card series on Thursday and advance to the NLDS.

Pete Alonso was the hero of the night for New York, hitting a three-run homer to opposite field in the top of the ninth to complete a rally and erase a 2-0 deficit.

Starling Marte then added an insurance run, bringing home an emotional Jesse Winker from second base.

However, it was Milwaukee’s game to lose going into the ninth, as back-to-back solo homers from Jake Bauers and Sal Frelick in the seventh fired up the home crowd.

The match looked like a pitching duel as the Mets’ Jose Quintana and the Brewers’ Tobias Myers both turned in some strong starts to keep the game deadlocked for much of it.

But the usual steady Devin Williams couldn’t keep up that momentum for Milwaukee, with the closer giving up a walk to Francisco Lindor to open the ninth and consecutive hits to Brandon Nimmo and Alonso.
