It has been a tough road for Bianca Andreescu, as the Canadian tennis player has seen her ranking drop year after year while dealing with several injuries.
At one point, Andreescu was sidelined for nine months with a back injury, and she finally made her return in 2024 at the French Open. However, she has only been able to play in a handful of tournaments this season.
In an article written earlier this year for the Players’ Tribune, Andreescu opened up about her struggles both physically and mentally over the last few years.
Andreescu specifically explained how she struggled to recapture her 2019 form when she won the U.S. Open and the Rogers Cup, now known as the National Bank Open.
“I didn’t want to be on court. I would hit a forehand, and I didn’t care if it was in or out. I just wanted to get off the court as soon as possible,” Andreescu wrote, “Don’t get me wrong, I never tanked — but I pretty much knew that I couldn’t win. But it wasn’t just that I didn’t feel like my game was there, I felt all over the place, mentally. I kept comparing myself to 2019. Always looking towards the past.”
The Mississauga, Ont., native appeared in 21 matches in 2024, going 11-10 with no singles titles. She owns a 200-101 record in her career on the WTA Tour.
She has already pulled out of the Billie Jean King Cup and looks forward to 2025.
Despite her struggles, Andreescu continues pushing forward, saying that playing for her family and country is providing her with the inspiration she needs.
“There was a time when I lost my joy in tennis. But I found it again,” Andreescu explained. “And I learned that I will always love tennis deep in my heart, no matter what. It has given me so much. So much that whenever I leave the tunnel and step out onto the court, I always feel a bit of that magic from before. I still think that anything is possible.”
