Senators use third-period comeback to spark shootout win over Bruins

Tim Stutzle was the lone scorer in a shootout Saturday as the Ottawa Senators completed a late comeback to claim a 6-5 win over the visiting Boston Bruins in a matchup of teams battling for wild-card position in the Eastern Conference.

The two sides combined for 32 minutes of penalties, as both sides brought a playoff intensity to Hockey Day in Canada.

Boston was able to dig itself out of a hole early, responding to an early 2-0 deficit with three unanswered goals to take the lead on Morgan Geekie’s second-period marker.

But it was Ottawa’s late push in the third period, responding from a two-goal deficit of its own, that sent the game to extra time. The Senators scored two goals with their net empty, including the tying goal by Josh Norris with 12 seconds remaining, using multiple blocked shots to keep the comeback alive.

Despite an entertaining, back-and-forth OT, neither team could find the back of the net, forcing a shootout where Leevi Marilainen stopped all three Bruins and Stutzle scored on Ottawa’s first attempt to complete the comeback win.

More to come.
