Canadiens clinch final playoff spot, will face Capitals

The Montreal Canadiens are officially heading back to the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

The Canadiens clinched a spot on Wednesday night with a 4-2 win over the Carolina Hurricanes.

The Canadiens are returning to the playoffs for the first time since reaching the Stanley Cup Final in 2021. That team was led by Shea Weber and Carey Price but now, after an accelerated rebuild, a young core headlined by Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, Juraj Slafkovsky and Lane Hutson has the Canadiens back in the playoffs.

Awaiting the Canadiens in the playoffs will be the Washington Capitals, who rode the wave from Alex Ovechkin’s chase of Wayne Gretzky’s goals record to the first seed in the Eastern Conference.

The two teams played three times this season with Washington winning the first two meetings in October and December but Montreal winning the third, 3-2 in overtime on Jan. 10.
