The Toronto Blue Jays will gain one outfielder and lose another in their post-trade deadline roster shuffle.
Daulton Varsho has been reinstated from the 10-day injured list and will be active Friday against the Kansas City Royals, the team announced.
Meanwhile George Springer has been placed on the seven-day injured list retroactive to July 29 while recovering from a concussion.
Deadline acquisitions Louis Varland and Ty France both reported to the team and will also be active against the Royals. Righty Paxton Schultz was optioned to triple-A Buffalo in a corresponding move.
Varsho, 29, has been out since May 31 after sustaining a grade-1 strain in his left hamstring while trying to leg out a triple against the Athletics. He was leading the Blue Jays with eight home runs at the time of the injury.
Springer sustained the concussion on July 29 against the Baltimore Orioles after being hit in the helmet by a fastball from reliever Kade Strowd.
The 35-year-old former World Series champion leads the Blue Jays with 18 home runs and an .889 OPS this season.
Varland has a 2.02 ERA, has struck out 47 and walked only 13 over 49 innings with the Twins this season. The right-handed reliever’s fastball averages 98 m.p.h.
France has a .251 average and .678 OPS with six home runs and 44 RBIs in 101 games.
Varsho’s stalwart defence – he led the major leagues with 57 defensive runs saved over the course of the previous two seasons – will add welcome stability for the Blue Jays behind starter Kevin Gausman as they take on the Royals Friday night.
