Authorities have yet to release the gunman’s identity
The FBI has announced the arrest of the suspect accused of fatally shooting conservative activist Charlie Kirk during an event at Utah Valley University.
“The subject for the horrific shooting today that took the life of Charlie Kirk is now in custody. Thank you to the local and state authorities in Utah for your partnership with the FBI,” agency director Kash Patel said in a post on X Wednesday evening.
Kirk, 31, was killed while taking questions from the audience during a stop on his “American Comeback Tour” at the Orem campus. According to police, the gunman opened fire with a long gun from roughly 200 yards away, striking him in the neck. The shooting sent thousands of spectators fleeing in panic.
Authorities have not yet released the suspect’s name. Video circulating on social media appeared to show the alleged gunman kneeling on the ground in white shorts and a blue sweatshirt, telling officers, “I have the right to remain silent.”
Police said earlier reports that identified an older white male as the shooter were incorrect.
