Rule number 1 of dressing for the English winter? Never underestimate the outfit-transforming powers of a statement knit. It’s a tenet that is sure to become increasingly relevant as we enter our first autumn with the backdrop of social distancing and jumpers start to become a key source of creativity (especially if Zoom has anything to do with it). While in previous years coats were the hero item of the colder months, it feels as though the limitations on outdoor events and commuting will mean that it’s what lies beneath that gets all the attention.
When I’m working from home, more often than not, at some point during the day I’ll throw on a jumper, but there’s something about a bright colour or fun print that makes the process so much more enjoyable. A simple jeans and t-shirt suddenly looks 10 times better with a statement knit, or a summer dress instantly adapted for a chilly September walk thanks to an oversized cardi. Really, this is about finding whatever puts a smile on your face, be it an unusual trim, pop of purple or retro collar.
