Blue Jays’ bats go quiet in Game 1 loss to Mariners

For the first time this post-season, the Toronto Blue Jays trail in a series.

Toronto dropped Game 1 of the ALCS 3-1 to the Seattle Mariners on Sunday, failing to score after George Springer’s leadoff home run at Rogers Centre.

Seattle got six strong innings of work from starter Bryce Miller, who was pitching on three days rest. After giving up the blast to Springer on his first pitch of the game, Miller allowed just four batters to reach base.

Springer gave Toronto the early lead before Seattle struck in the sixth. Cal Raleigh homered with two outs off starter Kevin Gausman and Julio Rodriguez came around to score on a Jorge Polanco single off Brendon Little to flip the mood at Rogers Centre.

Polanco singled home another run in the eighth, adding some insurance for the Mariners.

The Blue Jays will turn to rookie Trey Yesavage for Game 2 on Monday (Sportsnet, 5 p.m. ET / 2 p.m. PT) in hopes of salvaging a split at home to open the series.

Seattle has yet to commit to its pitching plans for the contest.

More to come.
