Hold the Black Ballet Flats—This Trainer Trend Looks Even Chicer With Shorts

I don’t know about you, but I’m really noticing that fashion people aren’t defaulting to trainers in quite the same way they once did. These days, it seems that they’re far more likely to reach for a strappy sandal or a ballet flat, meaning the once go-with-everything shoe is making far fewer appearances than it did just a few seasons ago. But whenever I do spot a stylish dresser wearing trainers, I’ve noticed there’s much more intention behind the pair they’ve chosen. And among the handful of styles I am still spotting, sleek silver trainers are my favourites.

Making the case this week, Iris Law stepped out in a pair of turquoise shorts and a coordinating long-sleeve knit, grounding the colourful two-piece with metallic silver trainers.

As sportswear-inspired dressing continues to gather momentum—think athletic shorts and sporty sunglasses—it should come as little surprise that sporty footwear is readying for a resurgence, too. More directional than classic white trainers and fresher than black pairs, silver styles inject an outfit with a hit of shine whilst remaining versatile. And, if, like me, you wear silver jewellery every day, they also bring cohesion to your outfit.

If you’ve been craving the comfort of a reliable pair of trainers, consider this your sign to invest in a silver style. Wear them with shorts, skirts and dresses for the rest of summer, then switch to tailored trousers and jeans once autumn arrives.
