Given the fact that testing and reviewing beauty products is a significant part of my job, I’m privy to buzzy launches several weeks—oftentimes months—before they officially become shoppable. It’s definitely a perk, and to this day, my heart skips a beat whenever I get a secret, unlabeled lab sample in the mail. It also poses a slight problem, though, namely with fragrance. You see, whenever someone tells me I smell good (my favorite compliment) and demands to know what perfume I’m wearing, nine times out of 10, it’s an unreleased potion I have to keep under wraps for the time being. I’ll try to describe the notes without giving away the brand or name, but even that requires mental gymnastics.
Over the past couple of months, I’ve tested a lot of these gems, but I’ve had to be patient until now to make my official endorsement. Well, here it is: my list of exciting fragrance launches that stood out among the flood of press releases, blew me away at first spritz, and garnered plenty of “You smell amazing” comments. If you’re looking for a new perfume for fall, trust me. These 10 are not to be missed.
The Best New Perfumes to Wear in September
1. L’Objet Alento Eau de Parfum
Key notes: Orange, aldehydes, orange blossom, fresh florals, lactones, vanilla, ambergris, white musks
Fruity gourmands are having a renaissance, especially in the luxury space. Just because a perfume leans playful doesn’t automatically mean it sacrifices elegance. Case in point? L’Objet’s latest creation, Alento, evokes a stroll through a California orange grove by way of sparkling orange, aldehydes, orange blossom, creamy vanilla, and white musks. It seems juicy on paper, but I’d say it leans crisp—like the first kiss of cool autumn air. Citrus technically peaks in the fall and winter months, FYI!
2. Voluspa Saddle Up Santal Eau de Parfum
Key notes: Cardamom, sandalwood, mahogany, cedar, amber, musk
I dare you to find a more fall-coded fragrance than this spicy blend of cardamom, sandalwood, mahogany, and cedar. While not technically a new launch, it does mark the luxury home fragrance brand’s foray into fine fragrances. I had high hopes given the fact that I have a smattering of Voluspa candles scattered across my apartment (Bourbon Vanille is on a constant burn once the weather turns crisp), and I’m happy to report that the brand 100% aced the assignment. I also love a cool, non-basic scent that feels like a hidden gem, and this woodsy, leathery confection will have everyone clamoring for the rec.
3. Le Labo Shiu 25 Eau de Parfum
Key notes: Iris, olibanum, woods
Introducing Le Labo’s latest City Exclusive scent, Shiu 25. Like other scents in the special collection (Gaiac 10, Osmanthus 19, Tabac 28, etc.), this blend is only available in the lab of the city it comes from—Beijing. But for a limited time, today through September 30, you can buy a full-size bottle no matter where you reside. The City Exclusives always feel like IYKYK treats, a scent you can make uniquely yours, but Shiu 25 is especially worth adding to your rotation. It’s quite airy with iris and olibanum, yet it has a woody base that gives it a calming, grounding energy—the perfect everyday composition for fall.
4. Sidia Braless Parfum & Strike
Key notes: Black pepper, leather, vanilla cream, coconut
The very first time I wore Sidia’s first fine fragrance, a fellow beauty editor (hi, Alyssa!) remarked, “That perfume smells so good. What is it?” Well, it’s technically Braless—the same leathery, creamy scent that’s basically a lived-in tee bottled—but it’s amped up to eau de parfum levels and housed in the chicest gold vessel I’ve ever seen. Inspired by a pair of earrings founder Erin Kleinberg‘s grandmother gifted her, the sculptural bottle (dubbed The Strike) is an objet d’art in its own right and hasn’t left my bag since I opened up my early sample.
5. Guerlain L’Heure Bleue Eau de Parfum
Key notes: Iris, orange blossom, vanilla, Ambroxan
Clearly, I have a thing for iris right now because I have truly not been able to shut up about Guerlain’s latest creation, which actually contains two types of the expensive-smelling note—a butter and a tincture—for a creamy, luxurious aroma. Perfumer Delphine Jelk previously told me the scent is meant to transport you to a breezy twilight evening, “that precise moment when day is gone and night has not yet arrived—a moment of transition.” I can’t think of a better fragrance to invest in as we transition into a cooler season.
6. Chloé Le Nectar Parfum
Key notes: Bergamot essence, rose absolute, orange blossom, tonka bean, amber accord, patchouli, sandalwood, cashmeran, Ambroxan
Chloé’s boho-chic fragrances will always have a special place in my heart (I wore one on my wedding day), but the second I saw the phrase “’70s inspired” to describe its latest launch, I knew I’d have a new obsession. I mean, who doesn’t want to be a breezy ’70s Chloé girl?! Perfumer Romain Almairac took popular notes of that era—tonka, amber, patchouli—but softened them with sandalwood, cashmeran, and Ambroxan for a more contemporary spin. With airy, playful notes of bergamot, orange blossom, and rose at the top, it nails that effortless, free-spirited energy to a T.
7. Valentino Vendetta Donna Eau de Parfum
Key notes: Tuberose, red orange nectar accord, sandalwood
If you’re in the market for a new date-night scent, I can’t recommend Vendetta Donna enough. It features tuberose, which has a velvety sweetness with a subtly animalic edge (the flower also blooms at night, which only adds to its seduction), as well as orange nectar for mouthwatering juiciness and sandalwood for a warm, skin-like trail. Deeply enchanting, it’s essentially the perfume version of a siren song.
8. Old Navy Suede Embrace Hair & Body Mist
Key notes: Wild honey, jasmine, amber, patchouli, white musks
Yes, a $15 body mist can smell just as expensive as designer creations. Just ask master perfumer Jérôme Epinette, who’s responsible for Old Navy’s rich, sophisticated line of fragrances. “It’s about creating dimension, texture, and contrast,” he told me about the process. “When the opening, heart, and base work beautifully together, a fragrance can feel polished and sophisticated at any price.” Suede Embrace, my favorite blend, contrasts airy notes of aldehydes, honey, and jasmine with a warm base of amber, patchouli, and white musks, and that distinction is exactly what makes it smell so divine. No lie, when I smelled an unlabeled lab sample back in early August, I thought it would wind up costing $300.
9. Vacanza Portofino Eau de Parfum
Key notes: Bergamot, lemon, jasmine, tuberose, gardenia
Okay, I realize that a fragrance called Portofino doesn’t exactly scream “cozy fall.” But those already mourning beachy getaways (ahem, me) know that this sparkling potion is essentially Euro summer in a bottle. Rest assured, though, it doesn’t lean too tropical—precisely what makes it fitting for fall. Bergamot and lemon add a lovely brightness, while jasmine, tuberose, and gardenia (the most intoxicating group of white flowers, IMO) have such a warm, sensual allure. It’s not coconut and sea salt; it’s sunshine and citrus with a hint of musk. Bonus points for the cap made of porous Spanish stone, which doubles as a home fragrance diffuser.
10. Ex Nihilo Demon Dancer
Key notes: Rhubarb, bergamot, peppermint, blood orange, orange blossom, black currant, woods, musks, tonka bean
I’m obsessed with confusing scents—a blend with so much contrast that you can’t quite put your finger on what it actually smells like. So when I saw one called Demon Dancer cross my desk, I had to know if the composition was as perplexing as its name. Lo and behold, it totally satisfies my olfactory craving. Demon Dancer is at once juicy, bright, airy, creamy, woody, and skin-like. It’s untamed and a bit mysterious and adapts to every occasion, from daily errands to sultry nights out. I may have just landed on my everyday scent for fall.
