I’ve had acne for most of my life. It first developed when I was a teenager and, despite trying seemingly endless products and routines throughout my twenties, it persisted well into adulthood. It’s only in my thirties that I’ve finally managed to get my acne under control, although I still deal with hormonal breakouts—and those years of trial and error have taught me a lot about what my skin does and doesn’t respond to.
If there’s one thing living with acne has taught me, it’s that treating it isn’t about finding one miracle product and expecting it to solve everything. Acne is rarely as straightforward as “spot appears, apply spot treatment, spot disappears.” Different types of breakouts need different approaches, and even the same spot can respond differently depending on where it is in its lifecycle. What might help calm a new, inflamed blemish isn’t necessarily what I’d reach for when a whitehead has come to a head, or when a spot is sore, swollen and stubbornly sitting beneath the skin.

That’s why, rather than searching for one hero product, I’ve come to think of treating spots as assembling a team. Some ingredients are brilliant at reducing inflammation, others help clear congestion, whilst others can support the skin’s barrier when you’ve inevitably gone a little too hard trying to make a breakout disappear overnight. And sometimes, the best treatment is knowing when to leave a spot alone.
In this edit, I’ve rounded up the spot treatments I actually think are worth knowing about, looking at what each one is designed to do and, importantly, when to reach for it. Because when it comes to acne, the goal isn’t to throw the strongest possible product at every blemish—it’s to understand what your skin is doing and give it the right treatment at the right time.
The Best Spot Treatments for Acne
- Best Overall: Dr. Sam’s Neutralising Gel
- Best Spot Patches: The Inkey List Hydrocolloid Invisible Pimple Patches
- Best Spot Treatment Device: ZIIP Dot
- Best Overnight Spot Treatment: Cosmetic Consult Miracle Skin Transformation
- Best Benzoyl Peroxide Spot Treatment: Acnecide Face Gel 5%
1. Dr. Sam’s Neutralising Gel
Best Overall
Works best for: Early-stage inflamed spots, clogged pores, and the lingering redness left behind once a breakout has gone down
This multitasking formula combines azelaic acid, salicylic acid, and bakuchiol, making it a great multitasker. Salicylic acid helps clear congestion within the pore, while azelaic acid calms inflammation and redness and helps to minimise the appearance of post-breakout marks, and bakuchiol reduces inflammation. I also like that it’s available both as a spot-on treatment and as a roll-on serum—ideal if your breakouts are widespread. It’s effective but feels gentle and barrier-friendly, and never dries out the skin surrounding a spot.
Pros
- Helps address both active breakouts and post-blemish marks
- Hydrating rather than aggressively drying
- Fragrance-free and non-comedogenic
- Works well under makeup
Cons
- Not the fastest option if you need to flatten a very angry spot overnight

2. The Inkey List Hydrocolloid Invisible Pimple Patches
Best Spot Patches
Works best for: Spots that have come to a head, particularly whiteheads or breakouts that have been picked and are releasing fluid
Spot patches aren’t just a clever way to stop yourself from picking—hydrocolloid creates a protective seal over the blemish and absorbs fluid from the spot, helping to flatten it while shielding it from your fingers, makeup, and other external irritants. I find these ones especially effective because they take that basic concept and add salicylic acid to help unclog the pore, succinic acid to help reduce the appearance of redness and excess oil, and ectoin to soothe and support hydration. They’re also impressively thin and matte, so unlike some patches, they really lock in place and look totally invisible.
Pros
- Creates a physical barrier against picking
- Helps absorb fluid and flatten blemishes
- Ultra-thin and matte enough to wear during the day
Cons
- Not particularly effective on a deep, under-the-skin cyst that has no surface opening
- Can only treat the individual spot rather than addressing the cause of the breakout

3. ZIIP Dot
Best Spot Treatment Device
Works best for: Cystic acne, and fresh, inflamed spots that are red and raised.
This handheld device uses microcurrent followed by nanocurrent in a 90-second treatment. The microcurrent stage is designed to target the breakout, reducing redness, inflammation and bacteria, whilst the nanocurrent stage follows to calm and repair. It’s super quick and easy to use, and once treated, the spot clears really quickly.
Pros
- Takes just 90 seconds
- Combines a blemish-targeting and calming phase
- Doesn’t rely on traditional drying acne actives
- Small enough to use on individual spots
Cons
- Requires conductive gel to use
- Expensive price point

4. Cosmetic Consult Miracle Skin Transformation
Best Overnight Spot Treatment
Works best for: Congested skin and multiple breakouts
This is less a traditional dab-it-on-your-spot treatment and more an all-over overnight skin reset. Each treatment comes as a single-use pad that you sweep over the face and neck before bed, leaving the formula to work while you sleep. It contains an extensive blend of resurfacing ingredients, including salicylic acid, glycolic, lactic, and mandelic acids, alongside willow bark and other skin-renewing ingredients. The result is aimed at congestion, uneven texture and visible pores, as well as spots, so I particularly like it when a breakout is part of a bigger picture of dull, congested skin.
Pros
- Quick and easy to use
- Helps with both breakouts and overall skin texture
- Designed as a weekly treatment rather than daily
Cons
- Single-use product
- Expensive price point

5. Acnecide Face Gel 5%
Best Benzoyl Peroxide Spot Treatment
Works best for: Mild acne with recurring blackheads and whiteheads, particularly when clogged pores are developing into inflamed spots
There’s a reason why benzoyl peroxide has remained such a mainstay in acne treatment—it tackles one of the key drivers of inflammatory acne rather than simply drying out whatever happens to be sitting on the surface. Acnecide contains 5% benzoyl peroxide, which releases oxygen in the skin and helps kill C. acnes, the bacteria associated with acne. It also helps unblock pores, so I’ve always relied on it when dealing with acne that features both congestion and inflammation.
Pros
- Directly targets C. acnes
- Helps unblock pores as well as tackling acne bacteria
- Very fast-acting
Cons
- Can be drying and irritating
- Can bleach towels and bedding

6. The Ordinary Sulfur 10% Powder-To-Cream Concentrate
Best Sulfur-Based Spot Treatment
Works best for: Angry, red, raised spots when you want to reduce their visible size and redness quickly.
Sulfur is one of those old-school acne ingredients that is currently having a bit of a comeback. It works as a keratolytic and has antimicrobial properties, meaning it helps to loosen dead skin cells, absorb excess oil, and calm the appearance of inflamed blemishes. This treatment takes a bit of getting used to—it starts as a powder and transforms into a thin cream when you rub it onto the skin. It’s formulated with 10% colloidal sulfur alongside niacinamide and L-carnitine, and I find it both quickly effective and gentle on skin.
Pros
- Works quickly
- Can visibly reduce redness and spot size quickly
Cons
- Visible on skin
- Can be fiddly and messy to apply

7. Fenty Skin Blemish Defeat’r Bha Spot Targeting Gel
Best Salicylic Acid-Based Spot Treatment
Works best for: Early-stage spots, clogged pores, and small whiteheads
Salicylic acid is one of the most popular and effective ingredients for treating acne because it’s oil-soluble—meaning it works deep inside the pore to loosen the combination of sebum and dead skin cells that contributes to congestion. In this particular formula, it’s combined with willow bark, boldo, and rhubarb extracts, plus soothing licorice and ginger. The jelly texture dries to an invisible matte layer that seals over the spot, so you can actually wear it under makeup.
Pros
- Invisible, matte finish
- Can be worn under makeup
- Helps reduce surface oil
Cons
- Salicylic acid can be drying if overused

8. Lion Pair Acne Cream
Best Korean Spot Treatment
Works best for: Red, swollen, and inflamed spots, especially those that feel sore or tender
This is one of the more unusual spot treatments in the edit, largely because its hero ingredient isn’t one you’ll see in most Western acne products. It uses ibuprofen piconol, a topical anti-inflammatory drug, rather than conventional acne staples such as benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid. The idea is to target the inflammation surrounding the blemish—and the formula also contains thymol, which is antibacterial. I find this works fast and is a good backup to turn to when nothing else seems to work.
Pros
- Specifically targets inflammation rather than simply drying the spot
- Antibacterial properties
- Lightweight gel
Cons
- Only available online
- Less useful for general congestion or blackheads

9. The Breakout Hack Spot Cream
Best Pregnancy-Safe Spot Treatment
Works best for: Active spots when your skin is irritated, sensitised, or doesn’t tolerate conventional acne actives
For anyone who can’t use or whose skin simply doesn’t tolerate traditional acne actives, this is a great alternative. Free from benzoyl peroxide, retinoids, and salicylic acid, it instead relies upon an antimicrobial and a mild exfoliating acid. The formula is designed to reduce the appearance of active blemishes while being non-drying and barrier-conscious, so it can be used twice daily and won’t dry skin out. It’s not the strongest or fastest-acting treatment, but it still manages to clear a spot within a few days.
Pros
- Pregnancy-safe
- Free from benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid
- Non-drying and designed with sensitive skin in mind
Cons
- Results are more likely to come from consistent use than a dramatic overnight transformation

How We Tested
Having dealt with acne since my teens, I’ve tested more spot treatments than I can count, both personally and professionally as an esthetician. For this edit, I considered how each formula performs on different types of breakouts, from early-stage congestion and inflamed spots to whiteheads that have come to a head. I also looked at the ingredients, texture, application and how each treatment fits into a wider skincare routine.
