A classic crewneck or turtleneck sweater is always a safe bet, but if your outfit goal this winter is to look of-the-moment and perhaps even trendy, a great place to start is with the sweaters you add to your wardrobe this season. I don’t know about you, but I prefer to not replace my sweater collection every year, so I gravitate toward styles that feel fresh but not overly trendy, which ensures that my outfits never look dated. And luckily, the most popular trends this season fit the bill.
The sweater trends this season run the gamut from a specific color to silhouettes to special details to necklines, and all will elevate your outfits in an instant. By the time 2027 arrives (which is soon), you’ll spot these sweater trends on all the chicest dressers, so my advice is to get a head start before the first frost.
Scroll on to shop the seven most important sweater trends of the season, from J.Crew, Reformation, COS, and more.
Purple
As you know, royal purple is everywhere, and I’ve noticed that sweaters in this hue are selling out everywhere. Part of the reason it’s a great piece to have in your closet is because it works as well with neutrals as it does with other bold colors, such as red or maregold.
Cropped Half-Zip
J.Crew’s Tiny Rollneck Sweater was an instant hit when it dropped a couple of months ago, and it represents an overarching trend. Cropped half-zip sweaters are popping up at other retailers too, which is a clear sign that this trend is only going up. I’ll be pairing mine with everything from low-rise jeans to pencil skirts.
Scarf-Attached
Scarf-attached everything is cool, so it’s to be expected that knitewear would get the scarf treatment. These draped styles add a luxe touch to any outfit.
Peplum
If you’re seeking a sweater that’s the opposite of one of the many oversized styles on the market, a peplum sweater is your best bet. These flattering styles can easily be dressed up for evening or down for daytime.
U-Neck
Are U-necks the new V-necks? To this question, I would answer yes, even though V-necks are still going strong. But dramatic scoop necks look much more 2027, and add an alluring touch to your outfits on even the coldest days.
Fur-Trimmed
It’s going to be a fur-trimmed winter, and naturally, that applies to sweaters (especially cardigans) among many other items. It’s an easy way to add a luxe touch to your outfits, and looks especially chic peeking out from beneath a coat.
Funnel-Neck
Funnel-neck sweaters are undoubtedly an offshoot of the wildly popular funnel-neck jacket trend that continues to be a fashion-person go-to. I’m seeing versions with and without buttons, either of which will make your outfits look very 2027.
