9 Coat Trends That Will Make Your Winter Outfits Look Chicer

Now that fall is in full swing and winter is just around the corner, it’s officially that time of year when coats are at the forefront of our wardrobes. They’re the items you’ll reach for on repeat throughout the next three months and the pieces that everyone sees first when you’re out and about. They have the power to make you look undeniably chic in frigid temps, even if you’re wearing absolutely nothing else that’s special, so choosing a good one is a must.

Which coat trends should we be buying into this season? Below, I’m sharing nine specific styles that are having a major moment. Many of these styles were omnipresent on the fall/winter 2026 runways, and celebs and It girls alike have already been sporting them. Keep scrolling to shop the chicest coat trends of the season, from opulent satin coats to brocade jackets and faux-fur trim. There’s something for every budget.

1. Embroidered Silk Robes

Thanks to designer Conner Ives’s fall 2026 Demi Couture Robe (crafted from tapestries dating back to China’s Qing dynasty and embroidered with crane motifs), the vintage-inspired silk robe coat, preferably with a faux-fur collar, has become one of the most in-demand coats of the season. I’ve already spotted them on a whole host of celebs and fashion people, including Kendall Jenner, Hailey Bieber and Zoë Kravitz. Opt for a vintage style (Estella has amazing iterations) or my favorite style—Rixo’s Micah Jacket. It’s the perfect piece to amp up your jeans and sweater.

Jackets and coats featuring frog closures are absolutely everywhere, replacing traditional buttons with ornamental braided-cord loops and knotted toggles and giving outerwear a refined touch. The traditional Chinese fastening (long associated with the cheongsam) is on a whole range of toppers, from opulent velvet coats to wool jackets and even puffer coats. It makes a simple winter outfit feel elegant and intentional.

The fashion set has been leaning into opulent brocade and jacquard outerwear featuring heirloom textures, rich metallic finishes, delicate embroidery, and dark-romance vibes—a decadent aesthetic that was all over the fall/winter 2026 runways, from Dior to Dries Van Noten. These rich jackets will add interest to a pair of basic jeans and make a fashion statement with zero effort.

Coats with elegant faux-fur trim on the collar or cuffs are a trend that pops up every winter. While wool coats will always look sophisticated, I’m also seeing this detail on parka and puffer styles.

Is there anything cooler than jeans and a leopard-print coat? On the runways, animal prints added a chic touch to winter outfits. Whether you opt for a neat, boxy silhouette, a faux-fur finish, or something with a little extra texture, it’s an easy way to make your existing wardrobe feel exciting again.

As seen at Khaite, Bottega Veneta, Saint Laurent, and more, shorter faux-fur coats are a favored silhouette this year—an especially convenient option for everyday outfits. Think anything between the waist and mid-thigh.

After initially gaining popularity in the ’70s, Penny Lane coats are back on the fashion scene. They’re a favorite among the French fashion set, in particular. With a furry trim along the collar and cuffs, the retro coat packs a charming punch.

I’ve been spotting long black and brown leather coats all over the fashion scene this season. They add just the right touch of drama and are the perfect way to elevate a casual outfit.
