When it comes to universally flattering eye shadows, I’d wager that green wouldn’t exactly spring top of mind. Well, consider this my formal petition to cement its neutral status, because I’m fully convinced that a green eye shadow—be it shades of olive, emerald, jade, or mint—is the workhorse of any makeup bag. Granted, I may be a little biased with my penchant for earth tones (I’m a “warm autumn,” after all), but even makeup artists 100% agree with my assessment: A pop of green on the lids, lash line, or inner corners instantly adds oomph to any eye look.
“I think people would be surprised at just how wearable it can be,” remarks makeup artist Tim Quinn, co-founder of Halo42 Skincare. “People sometimes get stuck wearing the same brown or neutral eye shadow for years because they know it works. But introducing even a little olive or sage can make the eyes look completely different.” Celebrity makeup artist Jamie Greenberg, founder of Jamie Makeup, concurs: “Green can be surprisingly versatile,” she declares. See, with green, you can easily control how much of a statement you want to make—be it an elaborate olive smoky eye or just a slash of mint at the outer corners. “Sometimes just a beautiful wash of color across the lid is all you need,” Quinn adds.

The 10 Best Green Eye Shadow Looks to Try
One-and-Done Olive

“Olive is the perfect entry point because it’s almost like a neutral,” says Greenberg. “Sweep one shade across the lid, blend the edges with a fluffy brush, and add mascara.” If you prefer something even subtler, she recommends smudging an olive shadow across the lash line and calling it a day.
Emerald Liner

Not a fan of a full green lid? Simply commit to emerald liner. “Even a bright green is easy to wear this way because you’re only seeing a little of it,” notes celebrity makeup artist Christian Briceno. “For evening, a thin emerald line along the upper lashes with black mascara is beautiful.”
Pale Pistachio

Pastel greens—think mint, pistachio, honeydew—never fail to brighten up a mood. You can wear them whenever you please, but spring and summer are especially made for the fresh, playful shades.
Jade and Gold

This vibrant jade moment looks especially striking on Eiza Gonzalez’s brown eyes. And that ever so subtle halo of gold? Stunning.
Metallic Wash

For a bolder look, do like Winnie Harlow and commit to a wash of metallic green on the lids and all the way up to the brow bone. “Super fun for a night out, and metallic is so in,” Greenberg says of the editorial-leaning eye makeup.
Green Smoky Eye

“For 2026, I like an olive smoky eye with the strongest color close to the lashes, a softly blended upper edge, and very little underneath,” Briceno notes. Keep the skin fresh and minimal, add a rosy lip, and you’re golden.
Shimmery Inner Corners

Says Greenberg, a playful pop of pale green shimmer at the inner corners does a lot of heavy lifting. Victoria Monét’s beat at the 2025 Grammys is the perfect reference—simple yet captivating.
Blue and Green

“I also love a light green lid paired with blue or teal along the lower lashes,” Briceno says. “Keeping the two colors distinct adds dimension without blending everything into one shade.”
Lived-In Teal

How does one zhuzh lived-in, smudgy shadow? Slot in a gorgeous jewel-toned teal.
Subtle Tightline

For something super, super subtle, opt for a green shadow or eyeliner on the bottom waterline, then extend the thin wing outward like the models at Moschino Fall/Winter 2026.
Which Eye Color Does Green Eye Shadow Look Best On?
Of course, makeup has no hard and fast rules, so you should feel free to wear any shade of green eye shadow you please. But if you’re curious how to make your specific eye color stand out, the pros do have a few color matches in mind.
- Brown eyes: “On brown eyes, I like emerald or cooler, blue-leaning greens for a distinct color statement,” nots Briceno. If you have golden or amber tones in your brown eyes, he also recommends olive or khaki for a warmer effect.
- Blue eyes: Olive and khaki shades work great for blue eyes too, Briceno adds, especially for those craving something warm but don’t love wearing copper tones. Additionally, “I love a soft sage or a slightly warmer, muted green,” shares Quinn. “It creates a beautiful contrast without overwhelming the eye.”
- Green eyes: If you have green eyes, try amping up the intensity with a vibrant jade, forest, or emerald. “I often gravitate toward deeper forest greens or emerald tones, sometimes paired with a little bronze or soft brown to create definition,” notes Quinn.
- Hazel eyes: “Golden olive and moss emphasize the golden flecks in hazel eyes,” shares Greenberg. Similar to brown eyes, warmer shades of green will effortlessly bring out the warmth of your irises.
What Are the Green Eye Shadow Trends for 2026?
Green eye shadow is versatile (and therefore pretty timeless), but in 2026, Quinn has noticed a more sophisticated, minimal use of the vibrant shade—a purposeful slash of green as opposed to a kaleidoscope of color.
“There’s something very modern about taking one beautiful shade and making it the focus rather than layering five different colors,” he notes. Briceno seconds the notion, sharing that “you don’t need several shadows” for a cohesive look. An olive smoky eye will offer just enough drama, especially if you pair it with a bold, red lip.
To make green eye shadow look fresh for 2026, Quinn also recommends using it as eyeliner rather than an all-over pigment on the lids. “You can take a pencil or a damp eyeliner brush with shadow and work the color right into the roots of the upper lashes. It’s a great way to introduce green without feeling as though you’re wearing a lot of makeup,” he explains.
What Other Colors Go With Green Eye Shadow?
- Blue: As depicted in Briceno’s green and teal moment above, blue is a wonderful complement for color-blocking. “I like blue for stronger contrast, or teal for a closer connection to the green,” he shares. “I also love pale green with cobalt blue for a bolder combination, or olive with navy for something deeper and more understated.”
- Plum: “I also love green paired with plum or aubergine. Those combinations can be incredibly flattering, especially on brown or hazel eyes,” notes Quinn.
- Brown: For those who adore earth tones (me), consider green and brown your ultimate neutrals. “A chocolate-brown shade adds depth to a green accent,” Briceno says, while “taupe works beautifully with cooler greens.”
- Metallics: Gold and silver both work with green; it just depends on your desired payoff. Take it from Briceno: “Antique gold warms olive, while silver gives emerald a cooler, sharper feel.” That said, a soft, pearly champagne will always work on the inner corners for a subtle highlight, Quinn shares.
- Lilac: A playful lilac is A+ with an equally pale sage or mint, according to Briceno, “especially when the colors stay sheer.”

Fun fact: Quinn was part of the Armani Beauty team when the brand launched in 2001, and the original campaign image—a model with clean, minimal skin, softly luminous green eye shadow, and a high-shine red lip—stays with him to this day. Twenty-five years later, Armani Eye Tints remain a personal favorite, especially in this brown-toned olive. “You can put a little on the back of your hand, work it onto a brush and sweep it across the lid. It blends beautifully and makes creating a polished eye quite simple,” he shares.

“Victoria Beckham Beauty Eye Wardrobe in Olive has that sophisticated, slightly earthy color story that I find incredibly wearable,” shares Quinn. “It’s a lovely alternative to the traditional brown or taupe eye.”

“Quinn also loves this combination of khaki-green and gold, noting that the shades “make a smoky green eye feel much more approachable.”

A longtime fan of Sisley Paris’s eye makeup (“Beautiful textures,” he notes), Quinn is quick to call out this Les Phyto-Ombres Eyeshadow in Metallic Khaki.

For a “gorgeous metallic,” Greenberg is a fan of this Danessa Myricks liquid number.

“HEAVY finish, but major payoff. This is for the advanced,” Greenberg shares.

Eye shadow sticks are A+ for fashioning an expert-level eye look in less than five minutes, and Laura Mercier has some of the best shades in the game—including this shimmering olive. “I soften it along the upper lash line or blend it over the lid, depending on how much color I want,” explains Briceno.

Says Briceno, this Anastasia Beverly Hills stick is straight-up magic. “The shades Greenergy and Sirena are so vibrant,” he shares. “You can wear either shade on its own or pair them in a green/teal combo.”
