Hockey Canada cancelled Tuesday’s Red-White game after two players at its world junior selection camp tested positive for COVID-19.
The organization says all camp activities were suspended for the day, including the game at Westerner Park Centrium, and the players were placed in quarantine at the team hotel in Red Deer, Alta., after learning of the results this morning.
As per Hockey Canada’s safety protocols, all players, coaches and staff members took mandatory COVID-19 tests upon arrival at camp and have continued to be tested regularly throughout the past 10 days.
“For precautionary reasons, we will also ensure that all players and team personnel go through an additional test before resuming camp activities. The appropriate local and provincial health authorities have been made aware of the situation, and we will continue to work closely with Alberta Health Services,” said a statement from Hockey Canada.
The news comes after Hockey Canada revealed last week that a “non-core member” of its National Junior Team staff had tested positive for the novel coronavirus.
Hockey Canada is in the midst of their selection camp ahead of the 2021 world junior championships in Edmonton and Red Deer next month. The team’s first roster cuts were expected to come after Tuesday’s intrasquad game.
The country is looking to defend its gold medal at the tournament and win its 19th title all-time.
