I Can't Stop Thinking About these 8 Trends From The Queen's Gambit

In my experience, it’s vanishingly rare to come across a truly stylish TV show. A few exceptions come to mind, such as Killing Eve, Gossip Girl and, of course Sex in the City (in its own bonkers, ’90s way), but in many of these examples the aesthetics are focused on individual characters: the Villanelles or the Carries. However, the moment I set eyes upon the swinging ‘60s minis and chic mid-century interiors of The Queen’s Gambit I was truly besotted. Every frame was an artwork in its own right and the interiors and outfits heaven for throwback style enthusiasts such as myself.

With her bob-and-fringe haircut and high-waisted trousers, the protagonist Beth Harmon, played by Anya Taylor-Joy, could have easily stepped right off the streets of east London. All I can say is: hats off to Gabriele Binder, the show’s costume designer, who managed to make the outfits feel both authentically mid-century yet still appealing to the modern fashion-lover.

Clearly the rest of the world agrees, and according to Netflix The Queen’s Gambit drew in a record 62 million viewers in its first 28 days, making it the streaming service’s biggest-scripted limited series. But let’s get down to the important stuff, i.e. the looks that I plan on copying this season. There are almost too many to name, but I’ve whittled down my fave to eight trends that I can’t stop thinking about. Scroll down to see and shop my edit.

Beth Harmon looked amazing in this pale blue collared knit, and it just so happens that there are plenty of 2020 iterations around right now.

A checked coat is an icon of ’60s style, and you can recreate the look with a little help from Joseph and Stand Studio.

Whether you opt for a modern re-interpretation or a vintage original, a ’60s mini will always be a fab addition to your wardrobe.

Layer under dresses or tuck into high-waisted jeans, the roll neck is the ultimate multi-taking piece in our wardrobe, and Beth Harmon certainly knows it.

We’re all about flats this year, and The Queen’s Gambit paraded plenty of lovely loafers throughout the season. GH Bass is the ultimate, but Dune’s iterations are also pretty chic.

The ‘granny’ knit is having a moment this winter and I’m taking my cues from TQG with loose styles in shades of beige.

I’d never considered wearing a head scarf until I saw Beth rocking hers in almost every episode. A vintage Hermes scarf from Vestiaire will do the job nicely.

From retro florals to graphic checks, a throwback print is the easiest way to inject a little Queen’s Gambit appeal into your wardrobe.
