Team USA claims gold at World Junior Championship with win over Canada

Canada’s sterling run at the 2021 World Junior Championship ended in heartbreak Tuesday, as the Canadians fell to the rival Americans, 2-0, in the decisive gold-medal game.

Canada finishes with a silver medal after suffering its first loss of the tournament in the finale, while Team USA earns its first gold medal since 2017.

The tournament’s scoring leader heading into the night, Anaheim Ducks prospect Trevor Zegras, led the way once again, tallying a goal and an assist to lead his countrymen to their golden victory.

With the win in tow, the Americans have earned their fifth gold medal in world juniors history, and their third in the past decade.

Canada loses yet another gold-medal tilt to the Americans, extending a streak that spans back to 1997, the last time the red and white bested their southern neighbours in a world juniors finale. In 2004, 2010, 2017 and now, 2021, it’s been the Americans coming out with the win every time they’ve met Canada in the battle for gold.

More to come.
