New York Rangers general manager Jeff Gorton says Tony DeAngelo has played his last game for the organization.
During a media conference Monday, Gorton revealed the 25-year-old had been upset since being scratched for the first game of the 2020-21 campaign. At some point this season, Gorton said that he told DeAngelo if there was one more issue, he would be removed from the team.
Rangers president John Davidson said the comments made by DeAngelo on social media were not a factor in the decision.
The Rangers placed DeAngelo on waivers Sunday, one day after New York fell to the Pittsburgh Penguins in overtime.
What happened in between the game and DeAngelo being placed on waivers continues to be the topic of much speculation. In the latest 31 Thoughts podcast, Elliotte Friedman outlined the events, including a scuffle between DeAngelo and goaltender Alexandar Georgiev after Saturday night’s game.
With DeAngelo successfully passing through waivers earlier Monday, the defenceman could be traded by the Rangers or placed on unconditional waivers for the purpose of a contract termination. Since he is only 25, the Rangers could only buy out DeAngelo’s contract for one-third of his deal — not the regular two-thirds.
