Alabama beats Ohio State to win College Football national championship

The Alabama Crimson Tide have defeated the Ohio State Buckeyes, 52-24, to win the College Football national championship.

Alabama asserted its dominance early, scoring five touchdowns in its first six possessions, and never looked back.

Leading the way for the Crimson Tide was DeVonta Smith, the first wide receiver to win the Heisman Trophy in 30 years, who torched the Buckeyes for 215 yards and three touchdowns on 12 catches over the first two quarters. At halftime, Ohio State had only 190 yards total as a team and trailed 35-17.

Ohio State pushed back in the third quarter. Quarterback Justin Fields got off to a strong start, connecting with wide receiver Garrett Wilson on a 20-yard pass that, after an extra point, cut Alabama’s lead to 38-24.

But even after Smith left the game with what appeared to be a hand injury, Alabama could not be stopped. Quarterback Mac Jones connected with wide receiver Slade Bolden on a five-yard scoring play that stretched the lead to 45-24 before the end of the third quarter.

Another touchdown to open the fourth quarter sealed the championship for Alabama, and made them just the second team in history to score 50-plus points in a national championship game.

More to come.
