Argentine soccer legend Diego Maradona dead at 60

Soccer legend Diego Maradona has died at the age of 60, the Argentine Football Association announced on Twitter Wednesday.

Maradona was released from a Buenos Aires hospital earlier this month after undergoing brain surgery and had been recovering in a private home near his older daughters.

The 1986 World Cup champion had an emergency operation for a subdural hematoma, which is an accumulation of blood between a membrane and his brain.

Maradona fell ill while coaching Argentine first-division Gimnasia y Esgrima on Oct. 30, leaving the team’s game before the end of the first half.

One of the sport’s all-time greats, Maradona publicly struggled with drug and alcohol addiction, and was hospitalized in 2000 and in 2004 for heart problems attributed to cocaine use.

More to come…
