Atlanta Dream select Canadian Laeticia Amihere eighth overall in WNBA Draft

Former South Carolina standout Laeticia Amihere was selected eighth overall by the Atlanta Dream in the first round of Monday’s WNBA Draft.

A Mississauga, Ont. native, Amihere spent four seasons with the Gamecocks, winning a national championship in 2022.

The 21-year-old averaged 7.1 points, 3.4 rebounds and 1.1 blocks while shooting 48.7 per cent in 36 games for the SEC champions this season. She also set the school record for most blocked shots in an NCAA Tournament game with nine against Texas in 2021.

Amihere and the Gamecocks took an undefeated season to the Final Four this year, before losing to Caitlin Clark and Iowa, ultimately finishing with a 36-1 record.

A six-foot-four forward, Amihere has represented Canada on the international stage multiple times and was a part of the 2020 Canadian Olympic team.

The Dream finished the 2022 season with a 14-22 record, finishing fifth in the Eastern Conference.

Stacey Dales is the highest Canadian ever picked in the WNBA Draft, going third to the Washington Mystics in 2002
