Auston Matthews will lead a new generation of American stars at the 4 Nations Face-Off.
The Toronto Maple Leafs captain will wear the ‘C’ for the United States at the upcoming best-on-best tournament.
Florida Panthers winger Matthew Tkachuk and Boston Bruins defenceman Charlie McAvoy will serve as assistant captains.
Matthews enters the tournament as one of the NHL’s best goal scorers, coming off a 69-goal season last year. While injuries have limited him to just 35 games, Matthews still has potted 20 goals and 38 points this season.
Tkachuk brings championship pedigree to the United States team after helping the Panthers win the Stanley Cup last season. The two-time all-star has 44 points in 46 games this season.
McAvoy is an eight-year veteran who plays in all situations for the Bruins. He has 20 points in 45 games this season.
The 4 Nations Face-Off will see Finland, Sweden, Canada and the United States compete in hockey’s first best-on-best tournament since 2016. The event will run from Feb. 12 to 20 in Montreal and Boston on Sportsnet and Sportsnet+.
