Superstar forward Auston Matthews has signed a four-year, $53-million contract extension with the Toronto Maple Leafs, the team announced Wednesday. The contract carries a league-high AAV of $13.25 million.
The contract kicks in at the beginning of the 2024-25 season.
The Leafs were very interested in locking down Matthews, 25, who has a 60-goal season and a Hart Trophy as regular season MVP among his credentials. In 481 career games with the Leafs, the San Ramon, Calif., native has 299 goals and 243 assists for 542 points. He has scored more than 30 goals in all seven of his seasons, scoring 40 or more five times.
Matthews is entering the final year of his five-year contract he signed in February 2019, counting for $11.64 million against the cap.
