Avalanche sweep Oilers, extending Canada’s Stanley Cup drought

The Colorado Avalanche are heading to the Stanley Cup Final for the first time since 2001 after sweeping the Edmonton Oilers.

The Avs rallied to beat the Oilers 6-5 in overtime on Monday in Game 4 of the Western Conference Final.

Artturi Lehkonen beat Mike Smith 1:19 into overtime to give the Avalanche the win, pouncing on his own rebound. Officials reviewed if it was a high stick on his tip, which was stopped by Smith, before awarding the goal.

As a result, Canada’s Stanley Cup drought continues — with the Montreal Canadiens the last Canadian team to win in 1993.

The Avalanche, who trailed 4-2 in the third period of Game 4, will face the winner of the Tampa Bay Lightning-New York Rangers series in the Final.

More to come…
