Avalanche’s Cale Makar joins exclusive club with 30th goal

Cale Makar has added another impressive milestone to his young career.

The Colorado Avalanche superstar netted his 30th goal of the season Thursday with a power-play marker in the third period against the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Makar, 26, is just the second defenceman in the 21st century to crack the thirty-goal mark after Mike Green scored 31 for the Washington Capitals in 2008-09.

He is the ninth defenceman in NHL history to hit the milestone. Besides Green, Ray Bourque, Paul Coffey (four times), Kevin Hatcher, Phil Housley, Bobby Orr (four times), Denis Potvin (three times), and Doug Wilson are the only other defencemen to score 30 times in a season.

Coffey holds the record with 48 goals in 1985-86.

This season, Makar leads all defencemen with 89 points as he looks to win his second Norris Trophy.
