The Blue Jays (5-3) were blanked 5-0 by the Mets during Friday’s opening contest of the three-game series. Pete Alonso hit a two-run homer, and newly signed Juan Soto added an RBI double during his home debut at Citi Field.

Soto signed a record 15-year, $765 million contract with the Mets during free agency in December. Alonso, who was also a free agent, opted to return to New York on a two-year, $54 million deal.

Bassitt earned the win in his season debut Sunday against the Baltimore Orioles. He gave up just one run on eight hits and had seven strikeouts over six innings as Toronto defeated Baltimore 3-1.

The 36-year-old Bassitt, who spent the 2022 season with the Mets before joining the Blue Jays, posted a 1.74 ERA and 0.97 WHIP during spring training.

The Mets (4-3) will counter with right-hander Griffin Canning on the mound.

The 28-year-old Canning, who signed a one-year contract in December, earned the loss in his Mets regular-season debut last Saturday. Canning conceded two runs on four hits with four strikeouts over 4.2 innings as the Mets fell 2-1 to the Houston Astros.
