Berrios, Blue Jays look to bounce back against Braves

Jose Berrios heads to the hill as the Toronto Blue Jays aim to rebound on the road Saturday against the Atlanta Braves.

Watch the game live on Sportsnet and Sportsnet+ with the first pitch set for 7:20 p.m. ET / 4:20 p.m. PT.

The Blue Jays were unable to solve Braves starting pitcher Max Fried during Friday’s series opener as their losing streak reached four games. Fried gave up just one unearned run and five hits with eight strikeouts over seven innings during Atlanta’s 3-1 victory.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. drove in Toronto’s lone run during the third inning on an Atlanta error.

Starting pitcher Kevin Gausman conceded three runs in the second but settled down as he issued six hits, three walks and struck out five over six innings.

If anyone can help the Blue Jays get back in the win column it’s Berrios, who has earned the victory in five straight starts.

The right-hander pitched six scoreless innings and gave up only three hits with five strikeouts against his former club during a 15-0 rout over the Minnesota Twins last Saturday. Berrios (14-9, 3.59 ERA) now looks to set a new career high for wins in a single season.

Atlanta will counter with rookie right-hander Spencer Schwellenbach (5-6, 3.69 ERA). The 24-year-old earned a no-decision in his most recent start last Sunday against Philadelphia as Nick Castellanos hit a game-winning single in the 11th to help the Phillies walk off the Braves 3-2. Schwellenbach pitched 5.2 innings giving up two earned runs on five hits with a pair of strikeouts.

The Braves (77-64) are tied with the New York Mets for the final NL wild-card spot.
