The Toronto Maple Leafs’ post-season has come to an end.
Taking on the Columbus Blue Jackets in a winner-take-all Game 5 on Sunday, the Maple Leafs came up short in their bid to advance to the Stanley Cup Playoffs, and will instead see John Tortorella’s squad move on.
Toronto pushed the series to a fifth game after mounting a wild, late-game comeback in Game 4 that saw them score three late goals in the third period and clinch the win in overtime.
Prior to that, the Maple Leafs endured a tumultuous qualifying-round series that saw them get shut out in Game 1, earn a shutout win of their own in Game 2, lose a one-goal game in Game 3, before winning a similarly nail-biting Game 4.
The Maple Leafs fell 3-0 in Game 5 as the Blue Jackets got goals from defender Zach Werenski — who exited Game 4 with an injury — Toronto native Liam Foudy, and an empty-netter from Nick Foligno, while Joonas Korpisalo posted a shutout.
The Blue Jackets will go on to face the Tampa Bay Lightning after the Bolts fell to the Philadelphia Flyers in their round-robin finale Saturday, finishing as the East’s No. 2 seed.
More to come.
